At the end of Fall semester, tell your adviser you’re not sure you want to do Applied Spanish with communication or straight Communication, so you’d like to switch to DUS and take Com160 but continue with other CLA classes and Paterno Aspirants.
In the Spring, you’d need to take an intro Sociology or Psych class (if a Paterno Fellows Aspirant, take the Honors version)+ COMM160+ Stats200+ CAS100B or C (if a Paterno fellows Aspirant CAS138H replaces CAS100)+ a Spanish class (because as I said even if you don’t continue with it it’s always useful to have the skill, it may make the difference with internships etc).
Btw if you can’t get a LEAP Pride with Econ 102, take the Honors version in the Spring (and take Stats200 in the Fall). It may look more intimidating, but the class will be smaller and more supportive; if it’s really not your cup of tea you can always switch to Econ 102 regular with 300 other people. It’s an entrance to major requirement so you MUST take it and do well in it -and it’s weedout, meaning it’s designed so that a significant percentage in the regular class don’t make it. That’s why taking it in the summer, when the class is a small group and supportive, not weedout, is the best.
I hope you’ll be admitted to the Applied Spanish BS at UP and decide to try to be a Paterno fellow Aspirant 
but don’t forget to report here what the results are.
Where do you see Applied Spanish as a PSU major? I can’t find it on the list of majors on the admissions website or in the Undergraduate Bulletin. Is it a new major?
Yes. I doubt many kids applied for it! 
That’s why @folklorerb has the best chances thanks to that AP Spanish class -and, if push comes to shove and they’re weeded out in Econ 102 or Stats200 (pre-reqs for Bellisario and gen eds for thr BS in applied Spanish) they can still do Spanish/Communication with that major.

OOS (WA) parent here, received an email yesterday morning from PSU asking for SSN and FAFSA info to be entered via the MyPennState portal, so I don’t think it’s phishing…
We didn’t know about being admitted yet, and while I was checking on the interwebs if anyone else got that email, my son texted that he was admitted to UP for CS, no email, but was just checking the portal in between classes. The admissions letter was dated 1/19. No mention of merit, but may change after providing SSN and FAFSA info?
He submitted his application before the EA deadline, but not the SSAR, and was bumped to RA. 1460 SAT (non-superscore), 3.82 UW GPA, 3 AP 5’s, 3 AP 4’s, also taking three AP’s his Senior year, Varsity Baseball/Golf, Deca, Youth Group, part-time job.
My money would’ve been on 2+2 based on missing EA, OOS and SAT below 1500…
