Penn State for Out of State Students

I’m strongly considering attending Penn State for Fall 2018 and one of my biggest concerns is the adjustment to Penn State’s environment because I’d be coming from way out of state (HI). Is there any Penn State students/alumni who were from out of state who could tell me how the adjustment to life in University Park was? Thanks

LOTS of students are from out of state or international. You can look at the common data set for more information on that. Each student’s experience is different. Coming from Hawaii to Pennsylvania will be a culture shock and a weather shock, but Pennsylvania is a great state. You have to consider that you won’t likely get home that often. That is a consideration for some and not for others.

Penn State has a wide variety of students and people find their niche. My best advice if you are coming is to invest in a coat and boots. You will need them!

Thank you @jlhpsu for your advice, I appreciate it

Are your parents able to pay 40+k?
What are your stats you may not be admitted to the main campus depending on what they are?

My family is willing to pay and I was already accepted back in January for Nursing Fall 2018 @MYOS1634

Then it’s excellent, congratulations!
Choose a centrally located residence hall so that you can avoid having to wait and wait for the bus in frigid weather.
Choose a living learning community to make friends more easily. The HHD SLO would likely be he most interesting for you and (I just checked) it happens to be relatively central.
Buy winter morning on location since Hawaii is unlikely to have appropriate clothes. Itbsiesbger sue cold, say, like in Minnesota, but it does get quite cold for many months.

Thanks for your advice @MYOS1634

One quick addition: do be aware that Penn State’s BSN students need to have a car by the second semester of sophomore year to travel to clinical sites. I don’t know if that will present a problem with you coming from Hawaii. Maybe ask your parents if they can purchase you a cheap car locally for the 3 years you are here? There’s also a very good chance that you will need to learn to drive in snow either at PSU or when you spend your year at Hershey Medical Center.

I came from out of state and didn’t know anyone. I had the best experience ever! I used to be very shy, but not knowing anyone made it easier to be myself from the start. You will make amazing friends from all over the country, even the world. Penn State gave me the time of my life. Wherever you attend this fall, good luck!

Thank you @tumbriel . My DS will be applying for Fall 2019 admission and he is also from a warm weather location.

@shaydenglenn Just reading this thread for the first time. I was curious to know if you did choose Penn State and ho the adjustment is going so far - especially now that it is winter. We just came home from a visit to Penn State and it was pretty cold!
