Gruesome hazing coming out of Wheaton College (aka the Christian one). A student has been completely traumatized and required surgeries.

@Snowball City, that Wheaton incident sounds more like a hate crime than a hazing. But at least nobody was caught slow-dancing. 8-|
How “christian” of them. How awful. It boggles my mind how this kind of stuff continues to happen.
I’m not sure what the parameters are regarding hazing, but I’m pretty sure that the Wheaton College incident goes far beyond them.
The headline on this story “Not a Penn State Case” is truly awful! So, now it seems that Penn State owns underage drinking fatalities??!! Really?
Penn State owns underage drinking-as-hazing fatalities-by-neglect/injury at the moment.
Though these guys also tried the backpack thing, at least they checked on him several times and reached out to an adult…eventually.
That headline gives PSU an opportunity to become a leader and make a difference…but it also gives an opportunity for self pity and denial as in the scandal. PSU leadership needs to step up and change the culture.
@OHMomof2 “Though these guys also tried the backpack thing, at least they checked on him several times and reached out to an adult…eventually.”
These friends called for help roughly 24 hours after he fell–roughly twice as long as what happened at Beta. Though their testimony is that they tried to wake him up and bring him food, much kinder than tossing water on him and slapping him to wake him up; it still took them 24 hours to seek assistance.
Both are awful tragedies. The scariest part that everyone should take away is that it is not hazing that caused this death at Lafayette. The vilification of fraternities and gauntlet planning aside, virtually the same thing happened here. In this case the excessive drinking was self inflicted with no peer pressure. The outcome remains the same. This should be a wake up call to all parents, students and administrators that by placing too much emphasis on Greek affiliation one is missing the boat. This is a much bigger problem that needs to be addressed! It is not owned by PSU.

That’s a pretty big difference. The way our alcohol laws work, with bartenders held liable for drunk driving patrons and underage drinkers, it makes sense that the frat guys who SERVED him (I’m being nice here, this was forced inasmuch as Piazza agreed to do whatever it took to join) are also held responsible.
You’re right. But he was talking to them, telling them he was OK. If that turns out not to be true, they may be liable also.
We all know college kids die from drinking via alcohol poisoning, falls, bad choices, car accidents, etc. We should do what we can to prevent this. But IMO it’s just not the same as a hazing situation. I am anti-hazing period, whether it includes alcohol or not. Looking at Wheaton - those guys were hazing a sports team. Not a frat. It seems to happen when guys get into groups of various kinds. It needs to stop but the adults aren’t all that into stopping it, for various reasons. So everyone says “You shouldn’t do that” and winks and walks away. Fraternities stay, football teams play, it goes on.
Amen to that.
@OHMomof2 - Your points are accurate and I do not dispute them. I would like to point out that it is not just Men (Fraternities) that haze each other.
Women do as well.
There are many documented cases of Sorority hazing that are horrifying. Trilogy, the underground sorority who was AT the Beta Theta Pi house the night of Piazza’s death was kicked off campus for hazing.
Yes that’s true @jpc763 though it seems it’s far less likely to result in death.
Reading more about the kid from Lafayette, @MomfromPA15317 , it seems that kid’s friends actually did a lot for him despite him telling them he didn’t need help - repeatedly. IMO it’s not the same situation at all, despite the fact that his friends didn’t override his wishes until it was too late.

No surprise here.
Extremely disapointing to me. Their negligence and callousness caused a kid’s death, who was supposed to be their brother. I don’t actually get it - how is what they did not manslaughter and aggravated assault?
Some call it Centre County PA. PSU owns the county and those that make and enforce the rules.
