Beta trustee board has been charged with code violations for running the empty house as a hotel during the last football game, and will not be permitted to continue the practice. Thus, adding to their legal fees.

Penn State Frat, Where Pledge Was Fatally Injured, Cited For Code Violations…

Finally some common sense.

“Finally some common sense.”—I disagree! This would only be common sense if the county were issuing citations to Airbnb hosts and others who do not have proper permits. It’s more of a vindictive move by those who think attacking the alumni will somehow avenge Tim’s death.

Actually, the borough regularly polices airbnb and football weekend rentals, as they are not permitted under local zoning laws, , which is a commonly known part of life here. Beta was stupid to think for one second they could get away it with, but they seem to feel they are entitled to some sort of sympathy and special treatment. And if it’s vindictive, well, maybe it will make ither alumni boards keep a tighter rein on their festivities. But I doubt it.

HOW A FATAL FRAT HAZING BECAME PENN STATE’S LATEST CAMPUS CRISIS…

@greenbutton " the borough regularly polices airbnb and football weekend rentals, as they are not permitted under local zoning laws". If that is true, they better start doing a better job. I stayed in my 5th Airbnb in State College this past weekend. I can assure you that the business is thriving and they do not have licenses and special fire permits, etc.

Airbnb is allowed in PA, they collect taxes for the state for over a year now. @MomfromPA15317 @bester1

Airbnb rentals are not like frat house rental anyway unless the frat rents via Airbnb which collects the hotel tax, provides insurance and such for the guests and owners.

@OHMomof2 That article addresses the state sales tax. However, that is not what the Betas were cited for. They were charged with not holding proper permits for temporary residency and/or some sort of fire code inspection. While Airbnb may be collecting and remitting taxes, I am certain that all hosts are not filing for permits and fire inspections.

Good to see PSU taking this new situation seriously.

@MomfromPA15317 Airbnb is a private room rental, the frat house is a commercial property. I think the difference is pretty clear.

Caitlin Flanagan, author of The Dark Power of Fraternities published in March of 2014 in The Atlantic, has written an article just published tonight about the death of Tim Piazza. In her newest article, she talks about Tim’s death and the surrounding circumstances in the context of the history of hazing at Penn State. It is well worth the read…

NPR had a segment today on a new movie coming out called HAZE. Sounds interesting: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4601504/

@SyrAlum I just read that entire article and now I feel really sick. My God.

Same frat in Oklahoma, but with several ADULTS present:

That article really makes me angry. I am sure when our sons pledge they do not expect to be hit in the abdomen with a baseball bat or be on the receiving end of a broken nose. Where does this violence stem from? How can boys this young be so angry? And at what?

I would NOT recommend reading the Atlantic story mentioned above…it is an extraordinary piece of writing but it will crush you. It will bring you to tears. It will make you wonder how/why any college can still have fraternities and why any parents would pay for their kids to be in one. It’s that devastating. Those poor parents.

I actually did not read it after reading @OHMomof2’s comment in #1013.

I think it should be sent to the “judge” who dropped the charges. That should be considered negligent homicide, at least.

The Atlantic article was absolutely chilling. Well written and well researched. The description of Tim’s final hours should make anyone’s blood boil.

Parents pay the equivalent of the cost of a brand new car a year - for four straight years - to send their children to college…for this? Not us, not ever. If either of our children decides to go Greek, we’re cutting them off. Period.
