Penn State...More Selective?

SAT Range this year has dropped from 1100-1300 to 1080-1280. Now, I understand that selectivity is a lot more than just SAT, but still…just seemed interesting.

Heavenwood…What is your source?

Despicable! &@#$! those s#@$#@ %#^%$#^@! What are they thinking? S#@$!

From the PSU Admissions Website:

Middle 50% Range
Penn State University Park 3.46-3.87
Penn State University Park 1160-1340

All other campuses 2.80-3.34
All other campuses 930-1150

I find it very hard to believe that 2007 admissions statistics are available. And my guess is that the SAT ranges and GPAs will go up for this year’s class.

yea stats for this curret year wont be available til around may… i can gurantee that it was more selective this year.

Possibly the statistics cited by the original poster(OP) are an average for all campuses of Penn State( University Park and all branches), or maybe it is true that average SAT scores are down this year due,in part, to the addition of the writing section which has exhausted test takers while also resulting in fewer students sitting for repeat SATs.Stats show that multiple test takers tend to increase their scores.

I probably pulled the average down with my 1100.

My stats are cited from collegeboard. A pretty reliable source, I’d say.

Penn State reports 1090-1290 middle 50% for 2006-2007 at UP. May be do to huge influx of freshman last year. Will be interesting to see what happens this year. But 10 pts. ? Whats that… 1 question?

Actually looking back at the common data sets SAT scores have remained the same (up/down 10 pts. for the last few years). It’s all good.

I’m betting the scores go up this year, because my friend applied and she was well within the middle range for every statistic available, yet she was rejected. She’s no slouch in the extra-cirricular and essay-writing departments either.

heaven, how do you know those scores are for the fall 2007 year?

sax, where do you get your info from?

According to this site http://www.psu.edu/admissions/steps/understanding/fyprofile.htm,

the middle 50% for the fall 2006 at UP was 1160-1340.

there’s no way that Heavenwood’s report from College Board applies to Fall 2007 - that won’t be available until the summer.
Also. College Board reports that avg HS GPA was 3.5. PSU weights the GPA more in the equation so some low scorers DO get in - rightly so since it’s just one test and many smart kids are poor test takers.
I agree that fall 07 stats are likely to be higher.
Also, stats by school would show differences although PSU does not break it out that way (Smeal, for example, is reported to especially tough this year).

All I know is that the report said 1100-1300 before…check a web cache if you don’t believe me. Now, all of a sudden, it says 1080-1280. Now, this is probably for admitted students so far.

Googled Penn State Univ. common data set and the school year. Stats are reported by PSU for this year and past. Agree w/toneranger…I can’t immagine how stats are available yet for 2007-2008 as they don’t even know who is accepting and who isn’t. I don’t get too wired up about SAT scores…thay are good at predicting freshman yr. grades and thats about it. Many people slide through HS without studying and only get serious in college. Again we are all only talking about a small difference in range. Lots of smart kids at PSU and great teachers. It’s all there…just go get it.
