Penn State Pre-med/SHC gateway

Hey guys,

I’m 99% sure that I will be going to PSU this fall for pre-med. I was wondering how good PSU is for pre-med and how well it is to do well there. I didn’t apply to SHC for some dumb reason, but I’d like to enter through the gateway program my sophomore year if I do well enough. Does anyone know how tough it is to get into SHC through the gateway program?

Thanks :)

Hey, I’m in the same boat as you: I did alot of research for other pre-medical schools, and I am also 99 percent sure I am going to penn state:

After doing research on how many students from a certain university get accepted to atleast one medical school, I found:

UCLA: 58%
UCB: 55%
UCSD: 47-53%
Johns Hopkins: 63%

and Penn state 70%, where students from past years went to Columbia, Johns Hopkins, Brown, Boston, Chicago, and other top medical schools around the country.

Keep in mind, the national average acceptance rate is about 40%, and penn state is well above average to many other schools!!!

Here is the list where past penn state students went to certain medical schools:

http://science.psu.edu/premed/premed/docs/2010%20and%202009%20Penn%20State%20matriculants%20in%20MD%20and%20DO.pdf

Dean Brady mentioned at an accepted student reception for SHC that there is no “cap” for gateway transfers. just do well and get recommended by your advisor/professors.

I don’t want to jack your thread, but I have pretty much the same question and people told me that Pitt is more geared toward medical.

Do you guys know where Pitt graduates go for medical school?

If that information is available it’ll be on their site. Your undergrad really doesn’t matter for medical school. If you’re looking to go to medical school go on the Student Doctor Network forums and there you’ll find thousands of doctors, med students, and future med students discussing this stuff. There are already hundreds if not thousands of threads on this topic (minus the SHC stuff) and they all say go wherever is cheapest for undergrad as you’ll be shelling out serious cash for medical school. Most Ivy kids regret spending 50+k a year for undergrad as it’s not necessary. Don’t go by where kids have gone on to from a certain school, it’s all about how much work you are willing to put in.

Thanks guys. How hard is it to maintain a 3.7-3.8 at PSU, which is what I would need to get into SHC and a good med school?
