Penn State takes action against Sandusky–

One big difference between this and Duke Lacrosse is the number of victims and number of incidents. But, it will play out.

There are a lot of good articles about this on the Daily Collegian.

1moremom, your wicked humor provides comic relief.

Ohio- I believe this thread is more about Paterno’s role and the 2002 incident. The other incidents except 1998 did not involve Paterno having knowledge.

In my opinion if the DA does not make some public statement about Paterno that indicates they agree with the majority assessment of this thread.
For those of you with a legal background is there any reason they could or should not make a supportive statement concerning Paterno?

Hunt, excellent post #199.

Hunt, this was the topic of dinnertime conversation last night. I said that I can’t believe there is any institution that has my loyalty such that I could not report this guy. For instance, I love my kids’ HS and have volunteered literally hundreds of hours on its behalf. If I found out that someone on staff did something this heinous I wouldn’t bat an eye at turning him/her in. I don’t want to believe that all these higher-ups were willing to turn a blind eye.

I have to admit, I was looking forward to the press conference just for the drama of it all. I couldn’t see how Paterno could possibly keep a straight face. I guess he decided he couldn’t.

I just suggest that it may not have only been loyalty to Penn State that restrained these people from reporting–it may have also been their belief that Sandusky was really a great guy–after all, they had all known him for a long time. I continue to think that they were wrong, and have to pay the price–but I’m not sure that this was simply a cover-up to protect the football program. Real life is complicated.

Adding to my post #206- could the DA’s office release a statement supportive of Paterno if they felt so inclined? Something to the effect of- Mr Paterno has established an excellent reputation in his 60 plus years at Penn State. Our knowledge of what occurred and Mr Paterno’s actions have done nothing to diminish that reputation in our eyes.

Is it beneficial for the DA’s office for Paterno to be getting this unfavorable shellacking? I acknowledge they may feel he deserves it.

Please note that Spanier is taking a shellacking for expressing support for the other guys. Why would the DA want to say anything positive about Paterno, when it could come out later that he knew more than it now appears?

The fact that they didn’t charge him with anything speaks volumes and, to me, is support enough.

Hunt - No, not necessarily a cover up just to protect the football program. But, a cover-up nonetheless. No one is implying these were not difficult circumstances. These leaders were tested.

Why would the DA’s office have a statement supportive of someone who was not involved with their office or operation in any way concerning their management of this case?

“Say it ain’t so, Joe.”

Will Paterno be an important witness for the DA on the perjury charges? If he is do they want to repair any damage being done to him now? Does it hurt their case if Paterno’s reputation is destroyed?

"Paterno claims that he was not told specifically what happened in the shower. "

seriously?? he is in effect saying the GA wasn’t specific or clear enough. does he not have responsibility to gather all the details, ask the pertinent questions?? the gall to act as if he could simply say he wasn’t given enough info!

And would a GA come to your home to tell you something if it was not serious? Not unless he is there every weekend.

Paterno’s not getting out of this unscathed. Soon, other people will start to emerge with more details about weird stuff Sandusky did, and who knew about it. Most likely, it will turn out that lots of people knew that he had a “problem.” This is still early days for this scandal.

The Collegian and its staff have won many national awards and it is considered one of the best college newspapers in the country. Sadly, this scandal will besmirch the reputation of the entire university, harming programs and individuals at Penn State who have absolutely nothing to do with it.
