Penn State Sandusky scandal

soccerguy- they were not friends, they were ex-colleagues and there is no proof that Paterno was aware that anal rape was involved. He also did not keep quiet about it- he reported it.

Now as he said in hindsight he wishes he did more.

Victim screamed for help knowing Sandusky’s wife was upstairs.

Don’t tell me Paterno didn’t know. Don’t tell me Sandusky’s wife didn’t know. Don’t tell me Penn St. didn’t know what this man was up to. Knowing what he was accused of, Penn St. and Paterno allowed him to continue interacting with young boys and using Penn St. as his mode of attracting young boys into his web. Don’t tell me Paterno’s relationship with Sandusky was strictly as a colleague. There are numerous pictures of the two of them very chummy even after the initial accusation. Paterno and Penn St. chose denial and a blind eye over facing the problem head on. They chose reputation and prestige over the possibility of having their empire crumble–exactly what the Catholic Church did knowing Priests were molesting young people. The “should have, could have done more mentality” is nothing but a way to continue living in denial and trying to justify one’s inaction and choice to turn a blind eye rather than follow through to correct the wrongs being done.

Whether anal rape was involved is irrelevant in some respects. Abuse is abuse–whether it is rape, touching, etc. It’s all abuse.

tom… are you serious? They coached together for 30 years and you think they were not friends? Thirty years?

It’s more than friends: one was the other’s boss, and the other was his “most trusted” assistant and heir apparent.

I have worked with people for 30 years that are not my friends.

Parallel universe?

The situations are not really “parallel.” There is no allegation of dereliction of duty by members of the administration. There is no allegation that the football culture facilitated wrongdoing, (Note that I did write “allegation.”)

Onward State had an article about a year ago that painted Penn State as a pretty typical top 25 program:

It is just mind-boggling how this guy expects sympathy. He’s using his grandchildren to try to get sympathy.

tom, with all due respect, I don’t think your career path is similar to a college coach of joepa’s stature. If he didn’t like his assistants, they wouldn’t be coaching there.

JoePa made a big mistake in not taking further action than informing his superiors, but at the same time, one mistake (no matter how big; let’s remember, it was Sandusky who allegedly perpetrated those heinous crimes) shouldn’t take away from a lifetime of good works (but JoePa did deserve the criticism for not being more proactive).

"Winning acceptance to Penn State hasn’t exactly made Maddie Beja the envy of her suburban Chicago high school.

Instead of being congratulated on Penn State’s stellar academics, Beja is hearing all about the sex-abuse scandal that brought down the university’s president and football coach in November. “The reputation of (Penn State) has taken such a hit lately,” said Beja, president of the senior class at Hinsdale Central High School, adding that the sex-abuse scandal is a strike against Penn State as she weighs her other options.

In the wake of criminal indictments that charged a former Penn State football coach of sexually assaulting boys—and that charged two top school administrators with perjury—Penn State faces another challenge. Early figures indicate it may be losing ground with prospective out-of-state students.

Penn State is heavily dependent on the higher tuition and fees it charges students who hail from outside Pennsylvania. Of the freshman class that started last fall, 40% were from elsewhere. That’s among the higher rates for public colleges in the nation…"

THAT is what I find disgusting about this case. Paterno was the only one man enough to admit he knew something sexual was going on. It is sad to me he died with this over his head. Maybe he should have done more, but at the end he told the truth and was still punished.

These other two clowns are going to get away with it, because it’s going to be impossible to prove what they knew. Sickening.

"…Yet, as a transcript shows, each time McQueary’s story was told it became less specific, until others at the end of the line reacted as if what he had seen was no big deal.
It will be up to the courts to sort out whether McQueary pulled punches in telling the story, whether the others lied, or whether they heard only what they wanted to hear.
“This is what happens in sexual abuse cases all the time,” observed Laurie Levenson, a former federal prosecutor who teaches legal ethics at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles. “Witnesses are embarrassed to describe in graphic terms what they saw and then it becomes a game of Telephone after that, as one witness changes the story a little before talking to the next witness…”

Excerpt:

A copy of the Feb. 2 subpoena for general counsel Cynthia Baldwin, posted on the school’s website Friday evening, listed eight categories of records, including “reporting requirements on the part of employers and staff relating to misconduct” by staff and others associated with Penn State.

It directed Baldwin, a former state Supreme Court justice, to bring the documents with her to a federal grand jury meeting in Harrisburg on Wednesday, but the school said that deadline had been extended by U.S. Attorney Peter J. Smith because of the volume of records.

The videos of Amendola and Sandusky are nothing short of sickening. That disgusting pedophile is actually standing there acting indignant because he can’t sit on his deck and throw a biscuit to his dog. Because people who let their kids sleigh ride on his property have turned on him.
