Penn State Sandusky scandal

The NCAA sticks it’s toe into the water …

[Jerry Sandusky scandal – NCAA president Mark Emmert signals heavy sanctions for Penn State - ESPN](Jerry Sandusky scandal -- NCAA president Mark Emmert signals heavy sanctions for Penn State - ESPN)

Of course, we’d be more certain of definite sanctions if Penn State were the football powerhouse and egregious cheater Cal Tech apparently is…/sarcasm.

Thanks, 3toga, for the link.

Have Spanier’s lawyers read the emails yet?

I wondered when the NCAA would chime in, but in my opinion they are taking the correct course. They, too, need to carefully tred. In particular, the NCAA has all the other colleges watching what they say or do, so it is alittle like the separation of church and state and can’t be compared to other times they have imposed “sanctions.”

How did Freeh get the e-mails and documnets to soupport the assertions? Was it part of disclosure in the Sandusky trial or did the college turn them over to Freeh?

rcefn your quote “illegal and amoral things have been going on for years”

how about linking some actual facts to your accusations so we can intelligently discuss those.

Well, not to mention that Paterno didn’t actually do anything that was important or helped mankind. He coached a sports team to win games. That’s all.

How did Freeh get the e-mails and documnets to soupport the assertions? Was it part of disclosure in the Sandusky trial or did the college turn them over to Freeh? "

In the background to the Freeh report, it makes reference to the fact that as part of this investigation, the university gave unfettered access to all electronic and other records. It’s clear that then by searching (I’m supposing by keywords, sender, recipient), they honed in on the Schultz/Curley/Spanier email trail that pretty clearly showed what was going on. It also appears that they never informed the board of trustees about this situation (aside from noting that they were granting Sandusky emeritus status and a nicer-than-ordinary package) and the board was taken by surprise with the 2011 allegations.

The Triponey link seemed to indicate there were incidents where Paterno wouldn’t discipline his players, who had been involved in a brawl, claiming telling the truth was the same as “ratting” on their teammates. That would be amoral in my view, also wonder if that would be a NCAA violation?

Spanier seems to be going with, “the best defense is a good offense”, so he’s trying to bully Freeh. Personally I think it makes him look like a small, malicious man, but that seems to be who he is. Of the crew I hold him the MOST accountable, as PSU president the buck should have stopped with him, and if Paterno tried to overrule a decision to report he was the one to stand up and say NO we MUST report this crime. Also, given his training in the Humanities, family therapy one MUST assume he knew what needed to be done, REPORT, and knew he should consult further if he felt there was any ambiguity. He did neither. He absolutely viewed those children who were victimized as collateral damage. I hope he sees the inside of a jail cell.

Wow Pizza, that administration made so many mistakes…really stupid mistakes all along the way and using the word “stupid” is the mildest of terms. This will be studied in B-school for years and years and years to come as “how not to run a university.”

Joe Paterno’s Alma Mater Cuts Ties With Coach

Jul 17 9:13a by Adam Stites

"After playing cornerback and quarterback for Brown University, Joe Paterno received several honors from the university. Among those honors was induction into the Brown Athletic Hall of Fame, his name on a student award and his name on the university head coaching chair.

The latter two honors will be revoked the Providence Journal reports, as Brown University is “distancing itself” from the long-time Penn State head coach. Brown is the latest of many people and organizations to try to distance itself from Paterno following the release of the Freeh Report that revealed the coach had not done enough to prevent Jerry Sandusky from sexually abusing boys at Penn State University.

Paterno played for Brown University from 1946-1949 before graduating from the university in 1950. He then joined Penn State in 1950 as an assistant coach before taking over as the head coach in 1966."

Just the 14 years of Sandusky running loose on PSU campus is enough. Do you really need more?

Sax, Curley/Schultz/Spanier/Paterno knew that Sandusky had done wrong things with young boys. When Curley/Schultz indicated a plan that included going to the authorities, “after discussion with Joe” that plan melted away to a vague “we’ll tell Sandusky to stop doing it on university property,” without any evident concern for notifying the authorities, getting Sandusky psychological help, or finding out who the kids were and getting them appropriate help. Spanier APPROVED that plan - because after all, what Paterno wants Paterno gets, and can you imagine the shonda if the PSU football brand was tarnished – and that’s what happened. Why are you pretending as though there are no facts behind this? We appreciate that you love PSU, but what is the possible defense of this?

Once the authorities sift thru the YEARS of coverups at PENN STATE more than the current offenders heads will roll.

A list of other crimes that may be six degrees of separation, it seems preventing the press access has been their downfall.

Perhaps this will send the roaches out into the daylight

^^^ at the bottom of this above page is treasure of informative links

Former FBI Director Louis Freeh’s report on child abuse at Penn State deliberately conceals the inactions and misbehaviors of state and local law enforcement officials – including Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett – in the same long-running scandal.

No mention is made in the title, nor in the report itself, of the years of inaction in this case involving the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office and the office of the Centre County District Attorney

When the pedophile sex scandal becomes public, the case is quickly referred to Pennsylvania Attorney General Tom Corbett. Corbett and his close allies would time and again obstruct and cover up the sex ring – for more than fifteen years. <<<< and they are NOT talking about PENN state here, but ANOTHER pedophile cover up

Right.

We had a Vanderbilt basketball player penalized by NCAA and suspended for 6 games last fall for self-reporting that he erroneously accepted a meal and partial payment for hotel room out of town from a peer, who happened to be an alum because the peer had already graduated from Vanderbilt.

I think NCAA will come down hard on Penn State. I think football is over for at least a year. (caveat- I am usually NOT correct about these things…)

The important thing about Triponey is that she illustrates Penn State’s MO: Wherever JoePa’s wishes came into conflict with the law, or university policy, or common sense, or common decency – JoePa won.

“I never thought the Freeh report would be the end of this.”

It is certainly not. It will be a very useful springboard for all the civil cases.

And in news of the very, very strange: there is an airplane flying around the general area of Beaver Stadium, towing a sign that reads “Take Down the Statue Or We Will”. Seriously. I am not making this up.

greenbutton, it’s not disturbing that kids want to play football at Penn State. What’s disturbing is the attitude: “Let’s put this behind us and get back to football!”
