So what? With the death penalty, they would lose ALL of their ‘current’ players and that is the point.

Hasn’t seem to affect USC. So, not buying that argument.

Sure, a few may not. But the B10 football network is on 24/7, so they’ll get plenty of exposure. Plus, they are guaranteed to start as Frosh.

Again, hasn’t fazed USC.

That’s because the scholarship penalty has just been implemented for this upcoming season. Only the bowl game ban was in effect.

Well, now current USC recruits can play for a bowl game, which is big.
4 year post season ban is a killer for top recruits.

What other differences are there in the USC sanctions VS the PSU ones (other than the 60 mil/ wins being cancelled)? Just wondering if the ability for players to leave and play at other schools without penalty was there for USC also…

The point of an appeal is not always to dispute that that a punishment is deserved, but rather to dispute that the punishment levied was appropriate. Those complaining about the punishment are not trying to avoid punishment, but rather are trying to find one that is not disastrous for a program that is trying to move forward.

Since the school agreed to and signed off on the sanction, there will not be an appeal.

I’ve heard it’s double the scholarship losses USC is currently facing, and for about twice as long. USC had a two year bowl ban, which ended last season before the loss in scholarships took effect. I believe all Penn State’s penalties (bowl ban and phased scholarship decline) are enacted concurrently.

Juniors and seniors were able to transfer from USC and play without sitting out a year.

^ Same with PSU.

<a href=“College Sports News - Chicago Tribune”>College Sports News - Chicago Tribune;

I THINK that all players can leave PSU and play immediately, not just juniors and seniors. I know at least one player annouced he would be transferring immediately, but I am not sure how many others.

All players, including incoming freshman, can transfer with no penalty, or can stay and keep their scholarships even if they decide not to play football. The wording on ESPN is rather awkward regarding the sanctions on scholarships. They drop from 25 to 15 for 4 years, so a loss of 40, and are capped at 65.

I just want to state something not touched upon with this latest sanctions:

The current football players have been hurt more than anyone. BUT, why does PSU still pay Paterno’s family the money he determined when he retired??? That contract was made under false information and so should be declared invalid. Okay, back to your discussion…

limabeans, I don’t think that the individual sanctions are done yet according to the NCAA. The end of the press conference, he said that they maintained the right to impose individual sanctions once all legal proceedings have been completed.

I don’t think that this is anywhere near the end.

Untile Spanier,Curley and Schultz are jailed, the sanctions on PSU are not enough…much of what has haapened would NOT have if they did their jobs

So PSU suffers and all those who caused it are off the hook, except for Sandusky

How about sending a message to the admistrators about their obligations and not turn the other way so a football program can continue

Yeah, if you allowed USC players to transfer because of some Reggie Bush stuff, you GOTTA let these Penn State players transfer because of an issue that is 100 times greater.

phillyfed…again, I don’t get the feeling that this is the “end”. I think it is still the begining. The lawsuits and the sanctions will continue as more information is sorted out.

We can only hope so

Until Penn state decides to really be open and step put from behind the veil of secrecy wil. I believe they have repented.

Eh.

Vacating wins is more symbolic but the rest of the penalties are very strong. Losing scholarships really hurts over time. Also loss of image is hard to calculate but very real.

And not being allowed in bowl or championship games really limits their attractiveness to top recruits too, I am sure.
