Penn State Sandusky scandal

He convened the grand jury to investigate when he was AG in 2009 and then approved the grant when he was governor in 2010?

without checking the dates (and God knows my memory is not good at all), I think it was approve the grant, convene the grand jury, hold the grant, become governor, cancel the grant. I also want to say that the governor’s signature was a formality and the grant approval is more appropriately blamed on someone/thing else – but at this point, certainly Corbett is no innocent in all this.

Edited to add: hey! lookit that! He approved the grant after the jury was seated, so as to not tip off anyone about the investigation. Uh.Huh.

Corbett approved the grant in 2010 after Second Mile board members, their families, and their businesses give over $600,000 to his gubernatorial campaign. Great ROI: $600K gets you a $3 million grant and the foot off the gas on the criminal investigation of a potentially explosive pedophile/child rape scandal. One hitch: someone else became AG after Corbett was elected governor, and blew the lid off the thing. At that point Corbett needed to pivot, so he pulled the grant to Second Mile and tried to position himself as one of Penn State’s biggest critics.

Corbett states that he okayed the grant so as not to tip off anyone that an investigation was taking place.

However people already knew about the GJI so his “reasoning” leaves much to be desired.

You can not award a grant and not have to explain. Egad corbett thinks people are fools, or he has gotten away with this kind of Politics for so long he thinks people will not question him.

“Courtney hasn’t been accused of being part of the cover-up, but he seems to have been there at all the key moments, and he apparently carried knowledge of the accusations against Sandusky with him to Second Mile–yet there’s no discernible indication that he did anything to stop Sandusky. It seems to me he needs to be included among the prominent enablers.”

What may be more important are his close personal connections to Paterno, and as a potential conduit from Paterno, etc. to Second Mile.

Very interesting about Courtney. And really, about the whole PSU-Second Mile-State College ties. Too many close ties to too many key people.

I’m sorry if I offended someone about football cards. I just thought it an odd way to count as touching families, but perhaps it was more effective in the area than I thought. And I certainly have nothing but kudos to those folks who provided meals, lead rotations, volunteered at summer camps. One of the unfortunate side effects of this situation is that those summer camps may not be available for the children who could benefit from participating (obviously–the good, clean fun summer camp). Hopefully, other organizations will be able to fill some of the gap, but it does take money to hold those kind of events, even with an all volunteer staff.

None offense taken, I know that’s not where you were going…I just wasn’t sure someone else wouldn’t be tempted.

Many, but not all, of the local programs were picked up by local agencies, who of course are using their own rules/guidelines/clearances/people to run them, but the kids in need of help are getting it. There was an appeal to support these local groups in order to continue the program concepts, and by in large that was successful.

greenbutton thank you for the update on the summer programs. I hope the funding and volunteers continue to be available.

At its session on August 6, 2012, the Executive Committee of the Middle States Commission on Higher Education acted to place the University on warning status and require a monitoring report be submitted by September 30, 2012. The Pennsylvania State University remains accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

To warn the institution that its accreditation is in jeopardy based on information contained in the institutionally commissioned Report of the Special Investigative Counsel (Freeh, Sporkin & Sullivan, LLP, July 12, 2012) and the Binding Consent Decree Imposed by the National Collegiate Athletic Association and Accepted by the Pennsylvania State University (July 23, 2013) and insufficient evidence that the institution is currently in compliance with the Requirements of Affiliation 5 (compliance with all applicable government policies, regulations, and requirements) and 9 (institution’s governing body responsibility for the quality and integrity of the institution, for ensuring that the institution’s mission is being carried out, and for making freely available to the Commission accurate, fair, and complete information on all aspects of the institution and its operations) and with Standard 4 (Leadership and Governance) and Standard 6 (Integrity). To note that the institution remains accredited while on warning.

Why did PSU have such tight regulations on letting documents go public? Was that related to the cover up, or was there some other reason?

Another story about the investigation of Sandusky and a booster abusing two boys on a private plane. This is coming from the investigation into child pornography being conducted by the US Postal Service.

Ew, ew, ew. Just when we think we knew it all, more disgusting dirt is uncovered. If the witness’s story is correct, I hope they nail the other guy too. Ugh.

Ew is right. And just as Sandusky didn’t begin molesting boys in 1998, this wasn’t the only “partner” Sandusky had. Just the first one we know about.

My understanding is the issue here is how PSU will manage to provide a quality education when they have a bazillion dollars worth of lawsuits and fines to pay. For the first time, I find myself personally worried about students attending PSU, and whether that’s a good idea for them.

As far as the plane story, well, it’s pointless to say things couldn’t get any more horrific, isn’t it? Because then they do? So we have a partner in assault, PLUS a witness who is only now reporting it. What is wrong with people? tissue

Not to discount allegations re Sandusky and the booster, just trying to keep some perspective. We have two articles posted here. The first from Radar Online with only an unnamed source. The second from the Huffington Post whose source is Radar Online.

The question is obviously why didn’t the source come forward during the trial and why aren’t they speaking to authorities? I’ll stay curious, but slightly skeptical until more comes out about this. Not because I don’t think it’s possible, but because I don’t want to go down a path until there’s slightly more evidence.

CBS is now carrying it, citing sources within the Postal service investigation who say the witness was interviewed by the Postal people with the presence of the FBI. And I hate to say it, but we don’t actually know that whoever this is didn’t report it at the time. It would be possible that they did, and it was not acted on.

So far, every time I think something can’t possibly be true, it turns out to be. But yes, it is a far cry from a definitive report. Hard to feel optimistic today.

Thanks for the additional info greenbutton. It certainly sounds legit, or at least the FBI and Postal Svc are taking it seriously (sadly). I wasn’t trying to drown out what others were saying. I just want to be very careful not to get carried away until things are more substantiated. This kind of story lends itself to all kinds of people coming out of the woodwork claiming all kinds of things. Often they are later discredited. PSU doesn’t need anymore bad press then it already has.

Wait…Where is Mini with the new breaking news of private plane and a booster abusing kids. This goes right along with his concern that there is actually a much bigger, and darker thing going on here.

I really hope he is not right.
