I will be going to THON next weekend. THON is a student run organization which collects money throughout the school year and then devotes a full weekend where assigned students dance all weekend, non-stop, to raise money for childhood cancer. The money goes to needy families who are unable to afford the medical care for their children or who need help paying for accommodations if they need to travel with their children for treatment.

The descriptions of family members who have been helped by THON money has moved me more than anything I have ever heard in my life. THON money makes the difference between a father being able to be at his child’s and wife’s side to love and support his family during chemotherapy because THON makes it possible for fathers to take off from work to be where their heart tells them they need to be. THON money pays the medical bills to enable the children to receive all care needed to get them well…and THON children say that THON weekend is the best time of their lives!

This will be the third year that I have attended this event. When I say that it is the most heartwarming outpouring of love from college students that I can ever imagine, I mean it.

Children in all phases of cancer treatment are fawned over by Penn State students who organize activities and make them feel extremely loved and special. Families are made to feel incredibly welcome and are supported with love and intense kindness from Penn State students who host pizza parties and organize fun games to help them feel like a family, together and having fun.

This event, and the amazingly giving students of Penn State University gives me new found hope that this generation which is often known for being selfish and self-centered is, in fact, the most giving, loving group of students I have ever seen!

Bless you students of Penn State University! Your extraordinary spirit of kindness does not go unnoticed!
