I am currently enrolled at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. This is my first semester here. I achieved 12 credits at a community college before I transferred here. I came out of there with a 4.0 GPA. I also am a veteran of the Marine Corps. I qualify for full GI Bill benefits. I also have 50 credits on my SMART Transcript. I thought I would like this campus but I feel out of place. All everyone cares about is partying and drinking. It is one of the cheapest campuses in the state and since the government is paying for it, I feel like spending a little more liberally

I was looking in to transferring to Pitt or Penn State and leaning more towards Penn State with the hopes of doing their 2 + 2 program and eventually ending up at University Park. I never took the SATs in high school but Penn State exempts veterans. I don’t know if they would focus on my high school GPA or class rank because I’m a transfer student. I know I have a slim to none chance of going directly to University Park but what do you think my chances are of getting in to the Erie Campus and finishing at University Park? Would my situation be more likely to get me in to Pitt?

Thanks in advance for all the replies.

I was told by an Iraq War vet that Penn State gives preference to Vets in getting admitted to University Park. He did not have high scores, but was admitted directly to U. Park.

Thanks for the reply. How bad were his scores?

I don’t know if I can answer your question directly, but I do know Pitt was chosen as one of the nation’s top military friendly universities according to 2010 edition of “Military Advanced Education’s 3rd Annual Guide to America’s Military-Friendly Colleges and Universities”. Pitt has less of a party atmosphere than PSU if that sort of thing bothers you, but it isn’t devoid of a party scene either (less greeks though).

There is a specific veterans service website at Pitt at [Office of Veterans Services | University of Pittsburgh](http://www.veterans.pitt.edu/)

Pitt also does not require SAT scores from Vets. (see here, which also lists what they are looking for.)

The website may be able better answer your questions, but probably the best thing to do would get in touch with people listed on that site to directly ask them any questions that you might have.

BTW, thank you for your service.

I can’t comment on the Vet friendly, but Pitt is easier to find housing. IMHO, for a non-traditional student, Pitt offers more diversity if you need to break away from the traditional college crowd simply because you have the city so accessible.
