Penn Traditions?

what crazy traditions does Upenn have? ive heard some pretty crazy ones from the other ivies…

The “toast” at the football games

a little more detail, por favor

3rd quarter, everyone throws bread onto the field

Penn students used to drink at football games. Obviously, there are now laws that prohibit those under 21 from drinking. Instead, Penn students “toast” by throwing toast onto the field.

yeah, and after the toast throwing, they have this “toast zamboni” (designed by an engineering student) that clears away the mess since the refs and opposing teams complained about the toast all over the field

i heard everyone’s supposed to have sex under the “button” at least once in their 4 years

under the button? what does that mean?

lol its this big button sculpture thats really prominent in kinda the center walk of campus

so then I guess everyone’s an exhibitionist then? OOOh I know where it is now. Man, that’s some extreme pda, and I totally stood right by that thing… eww… I’m gonna go take about 50 showers…

That’s so sexy. Daria, let’s button up and down. In 30 minutes. Yes.

I heard one thing where you’re not supposed to walk over the clock (is it a clock or a sundial i forget) on locust walk or you’ll fail your first midterm.

after you take your first midterm, of course, you can walk all over it.

lol when I was on the tour everyone walked around it except me tour guide.

Penn Fight Songs:

Quaker vocals trumpet ‘The Red and the Blue’

Some of the best-known Quaker traditions are those that force the Penn faithful to lift their voices in song. This is a guide to three of the most popular fight songs that can be heard at football games, convocation, graduation and other campus events.

After Penn scores, students begin to chant The Battle Cry of Penn.

Hang Jeff Davis on a sour apple tree
Down sent McGinty to the bottom of the sea
She’s my Annie, and I’m her Joe, So listen to my tale of
(Whoa!)
Any ice today lady?
No!
Giddy up!
Pennsyl-Pennsyl-Pennsylvania!
Pennsyl-Pennsyl-Pennsylvania!
Pennsyl-Pennsyl-Pennsylvania!
Oh Pennsylvan-i-a!

And if the Battle Cry doesn’t rile fans , Quakers sing Drink a Highball, more commonly known as the “Toast Song,” at the end of the third quarter of football games.

Drink a highball, at nightfall,
Be good fellows while you may
For tomorrow may bring sorrow,
So tonight, let’s all be gay.

Tell the story, of the glory,
Of Pennsylvan-i-a,
Drink a highball, and be jolly
Here’s a toast to dear old Penn!

And no sporting event, or any other Penn event, would be complete without a rousing rendition of The Red and Blue. The song at the Homecoming game’s finale often leaves many alumni in tears.

Come all ye loyal classmen now,
In Hall and Campus through,
Lift up your hearts and voices
For the royal Red and Blue

Fair Harvard has her crimson,
Old Yale her colors, too,
But for dear Pennsylvan-i-a
We wear the Red and Blue!

Hurrah! Hurrah! Pennsylvan-i-a,
Hurrah for the Red and the Blue!
Hurrah, hurrah, hurrah, hurrah!
Hurrah for the Red and the Blue!

also the econ scream, which btw was really funny this year. on the eve of the first econ midterm all people taking econ 1 (aka a ton of freshman) as well as mostly all other freshman get together at midnight in the quad and scream their heads off. However, people don’t go for the scream they also go because it’s also referred to as the econ streak. So a bunch of people streak yey. This years scream was funny because some guy in crutches streaked and the police was chasing after him as he hobbled away.

also it’s not a clock or a sundial it’s a compass.

other traditions are hey day (when the juniors officially become seniors) and i guess spring fling has become a tradition.

D’oh. It is a compass. I feel like an idiot now, why did I think clock… you can’t walk on a clock lol.

and for some reason I think the point of this thread is to find out some more stuff to put on the Why penn essay… maybe I’m wrong.

Ok for some clarifications—Penn students did not used to drink highballs at the games. That is simply rumor. The Toast tradition was started by the now-director of the band, R. Greer Cheeseman, when he was an undergrad at Penn. Also the battle cry of penn has been banned from all games because students began screaming F*** you instead of Giddy-Up! It is still sung, but the band cannot play it anymore.

Econ scream is big here, as is the idea of not walking on the compass as others have mentioned. Some try to walk the Quad, Nipple to Provost’s Tower. =)
