My dog appeared to have dislocated a small bone in his foot today, jumping a ditch that was wider than he assumed. I felt it go back into place when I ran my hands over his legs to check him out. I will take him to his vet tomorrow. Anyone know which people meds could be used as an anti-inflammatory, safely, just for the 24 hours.
Here’s an article with some suggestions. Good luck!
check with a neighbor or a friend. Most pet owners many have a Rimdyl or two laying around and you can replace it after your vet visit. My pups are 11 pounds and their Rimadyl dosage for pain/inflammation is 1/2 of a 25 mg chewable tablet every 12 hours.
Ask your vet to give you a couple extra to have on hand for the next time.
Call the vet to get a recommendation.
When you visit the vet, be sure to tell him/her what meds you gave (including when and how much). The vet will want to know what’s currently in pup’s system before prescribing additional pain relievers.
My dog was prescribed Tramadol for chronic pain. Same dosage I take. But I wouid call the emergency 24/7 vet in your area before giving your dog anything.
For a while I was soaking my dog’s foot in epsom salts . She seemed to like the warm water.
Google if you could give it a low dose aspirin and how much per pound.
A baby aspirin is safe- although those are called “low dose” ones now. NO TYLENOL, ever!!!
And no Aleve! It will kill your dog.
One of my dogs is on Tramadol and another on Rimadyl.
Why no tylenol?
I did find some Rimadyl at the 3rd neighbor I checked with, fingers crossed for the best possible results tomorrow at the vet, though with extremely active athletic dogs, I am not sure if a fracture or a bad soft tissue injury is “better”
@Iglooo - Acetaminophen is highly toxic to animals; causes liver damage.
No tylenol because dogs are not human beings. They have different metabolisms and tolerate medications differently. Tylenol can be toxic in overdose, and the safe dosage window is small enough that most vets avoid using it. It’s also extremely toxic to cats.
Do not give your dog ANYTHING that is not prescribed. Different breeds can even have different sensitivities to certain drugs. What’s safe for a friend’s dog might not be safe for yours. Weight, age, dose…all figure in, too.
MOST IMPORTANTLY:
You can tell a person to stay off his damaged foot. You can’t tell a dog not to. The pain is the best communication the dog has to stay off the foot and not do more damage. Don’t hide the pain, it’s there for a reason. it protects him from doing more damage.
When our older dog (at 45 lbs) hurt his leg, we called our vet and was told to give him a 1/2 of a Benadryl tablet, not to mask the pain, but to help him rest, as it would make him stay off of it.
If you have a crate, crating the dog is the obvious solution.
Morning all
So, $400 later, we have an x-rayed and splinted pup, the paw was quite swollen this morning from the carpus (wrist) down & the x-ray was not 100% confirming the issue. One tiny bone you can see is fractured, the other, one of 7 bones making up the carpus is questionable and has been referred to an ortho guy (please please please, no surgery recommendation, please) The vet thinks the metacarpal below that joint got jammed up/into the carpus and I put that bone back in place but it still could have fractured something. Either way, it’s a long slow recovery for an active athletic dog ;(
Sounds like it could have been a lot worse. Hoping no surgery is needed.
Did you ask if you should cut down on his diet, or change anything, while the activity is lower than normal, or while the body burns a lot of energy healing?
We’ll be going back in a few days, so for now we’re just keeping him quiet and thinking good thoughts about the next 48 hours, I fear this could be a 12 week recovery & then we may have to adjust his diet
So sorry to hear that he’s hurting and seems to have a fracture, but let’s hope that no surgery is needed! Do you have a “specialists” practice near you for a veterinary orthopedics referral?
THC, but you can only buy that in Washington and Colorado, and maybe a few other states. Seriously my friends dog had cancer and they gave there dog THC for the last few months until they had to put her down.
