Percent of freshman students who submitted high school gpa: 73.66%

I was just looking at the common data set and this just struck me as odd. For 2009-2010 it was 63.62%. Doesn’t that seem a little low? They require that a transcript is sent so they obviously look at gpa, and I doubt that so much of the freshman class came from schools where there were no grades.

Does anyone have a possible explanation?

Most likely, it is simply that only 73.66% of the high schools of students applying to Wesleyan calculate the GPA and list it on the transcript. See College Confidential’s note: [How Will Colleges Compute Voke School GPA? - Ask The Dean](http://www.collegeconfidential.com/dean/archives/how-will-colleges-compute-voke-school-gpa.htm)

Also, note that Wesleyan is very aware that average GPAs and class ranks vary by high school, and therefore, the most important admission criterion is actually the “rigor of the high school curriculum” that the applicant pursued. And if you are fortunate enough to get into Wes, I get the sense from talking to my son that rigor and not just grades are more highly valued within the university as well. Not that grades are irrelevant–but several majors like the College of Social Studies and the College of Letters, are mostly ungraded.
