Percussion Performance Pros/Cons (Eastman vs Peabody)

My son is trying to decide between Eastman and Peabody for percussion performance and it’s very hard to compare. Eastman has Michael Burritt. Peabody has Ian Rosenbaum. One is considered the absolute best, the other seems a bit more cutting edge.

Of course my son doesn’t know exactly what he wants to do professionally yet. I think likely he’ll go on to a graduate degree.

Anyone who goes to or has graduated from either with any insights? Much appreciated

I think you will get informed help on the music major forum here on CC. Go to “majors” and choose music major. There are folks on there deciding between these and other schools. Did you get more aid at one than the other?

As a percussion parent, my only advice is to remember that as an undergrad percussionist your child will study with more than one professor (remember there are 20+ instruments for them to master). So, look at who else is teaching at the school (timpani, world percussion etc.) when making a decision.

For my kid’s UG he had a wide range of teachers, including one of the best-known world percussionists to learn from. Grad school is a better time to seek out the best of the best on the instrument they want to focus on, whether is mallets, timpani etc.
