As a percussion parent, my only advice is to remember that as an undergrad percussionist your child will study with more than one professor (remember there are 20+ instruments for them to master). So, look at who else is teaching at the school (timpani, world percussion etc.) when making a decision.
For my kid’s UG he had a wide range of teachers, including one of the best-known world percussionists to learn from. Grad school is a better time to seek out the best of the best on the instrument they want to focus on, whether is mallets, timpani etc.
