If you do well on the ACT Writing seciton (11 on the essay), but crappy on everything else, when you retake it, do you take the Writing Section again?

I didn’t retake the writing because I scored a 12 on the essay and my GC said that was the right move

I got a 11 the first time and didn’t want to take the writing section again cause I was pretty sure I wouldn’t score so high again.

My dad told me to take it so I did and got a 12! So never doubt yourself!

The ACT grades the essay so much easier than the College Board does for the SAT. Plus, the topics are simpler.

But my question is, do we have to retake the “essay” if you do well on it the first time?

No, as long as you don’t sign up for the writing portion. Save youself the $12.

You don’t have to take the essay again. But you can’t send just your essay score to colleges–you send all your scores for one test date together. So you can’t send your good essay score without the not-so-good multiple-choice scores. And you can’t combine your good essay score with an English score from a different test date to create a good combined English/Writing score.
