I’m a sophomore and I’m probably going to get a B this semester in Calc A. I already got two Bs first semester of freshmen year. This will drop my GPA to a 3.89 and my weighted to a 4.8. My extracurriculars aren’t spectacular, but are pretty average for an Ivy applicant. Do I stand a chance if I make up for my GPA with an ACT score of 34+? I thought I still had a chance but looking through the results threads, most of the acceptances had 4.0s. Thanks in advance for any advice.

A perfect GPA is not required. My son did not have a perfect GPA and was accepted. I did not study the results threads carefully, but am surprised that you report that most of the acceptances had 4.0.

While most accepted students have a perfect GPA, not all do. Yale is far more concerned with other things (SATs, ACTs, ECs, Essays, etc) to care about the difference between a 3.9 and 4.0.

Once you hit the 3.8 mark, most colleges won’t care about your GPA after that if you’re competitive in the other aspects of your application.

My school doesn’t do GPA, but according to Naviance I have a 3.65. But then again, I go to a college prep school, not a public school. The average seems low, but it is actually on the mark for the average accepted students’ GPA for Yale from my school. If you can, compare data with students from your high school, not anonymous users from different high schools that have different grading standards.

Perfect GPA not required. 3.89 unweighted is very good. Your ACT scores are not as important as you seem to perceive them - the application essay is much more important. Add some more extracurrics if you are concerned, but make sure they are meaningful. Also, you’re only still a sophomore. You’ve got some time to bring your grades up.
