Your point in posting is what?
Not a good place to be average. see alumni.
How Silicon Valley Created America’s Largest Homeless Camp
OP.
I see that you are a California kid from a Catholic high school studying at Northeastern in Boston…As Richard Sherman would say “u mad bro?”
I’m confused. On some of your threads you address yourself as a parent and on others you address yourself as a student? What is it? And I understand you are from southern California…and, you or your son is studying engineering at Northeastern…but, why the animus toward Silicon Valley, Palo Alto or for that matter the top public high schools in Palo Alto? What did they do to you???
Gravitas, it is probably not a matter of what Palo Alto “did” to the OP as much as some misguided parents did to transform a number of schools in the region in toxic places. It is no longer about the pursuit of excellence but all about what this real or fabricated excellence might mean in a world where social climbing dwarfs everything.
Palo Alto is just a microcosm of what has happened in many places.
Suicide has little to do with what a persons environment is like. They could be at the happiest place ever and still commit suicide
Why the need to start thread after thread with links to articles?
That ^ is not nearly as annoying as the inability to even reach the bleepin’ article because of the ads blocking content, and which are impossible to CLOSE. (And the computer I happen to be on funs fast. Not a computer problem.)
Next time, the OP could actually link to an article it was POSSIBLE TO READ.
Reminder to all…it’s a snow day in Boston. Just saying!!
I am a lurker and this is the first time I have felt compelled to respond. The title of your post is smug and callous. We in Palo Alto don’t refer to ourselves as “perfect”. The articles you link to are irrelevant to the problems our children face. Show some respect - we’re talking about vulnerable children here. This is not a contest where you have to disparage my community to feel better about yours.
…That was the title of the linked article.
It shows up fine for me… Try a different browser maybe. Or If your screen resolution is really low that may be the problem.
Thank you for the clarification. The title so disgusted me that I didn’t bother to open the link. Now that I’ve read it, I’m still disappointed with the title but I do agree with some of what the blogger wrote.
I Read the article. The title in the blog article is the same as the title in the newspaper as there is a jpg of that article. So an adult commits suicide one day and a student the next (or vice versa) and the city pays a guard to stand at the crossing. Strange days indeed and the article and comments in the article allude to
Pressure on kids to go “Ivy” or be losers the rest of their lives.
Title of the blog article is “Perfect Palo Alto”. Title of the local Palo Alto newspaper article is “Another student takes his life”. They are not the same. The guards have been at multiple train crossings for several years. Most students know they will not go to an Ivy. Less than 5% of the class of 2014 are attending an Ivy. In contrast to that, roughly 20% of that class is attending one of our fine local community colleges. The majority of students attend a state school. I think the pressure to attend an Ivy is probably felt by students in the top 10% of students, but other students are more realistic.
