Perfect score on ACT writing sample?

I received a 36/36 on the writing/essay portion of my ACT. I also scored perfectly on Reading and English, but I did not do as well on math and science. My overall score came to be a 32.

I had a pretty rough start to high school (did not do so great my freshman and sophomore year), and even though I now do very well, I was hoping my test scores would help me out in the admissions process. The school I applied ED to is a bit out of reach (G.P.A wise). I am applying as an English major, and the “talent” I focus on is writing, all of my EC’s and current jobs are writing focused.

My teacher informed me that the writing sample is hardly looked at, and only my overall score will truly be seen. How true is this? Do colleges solely look at the accumulative? If so, what is the writing sample even used for (considering it does not affect the overall score)?

Thank you.

@eloquenceviolet - great job on the essay (I believe you took an earlier version of ACT, right?). IMHO - I think your teacher is correct that the essay is usually optional in several schools, and even if it was required, the essay scores are not usually used. But that may not be the case because you are applying for an English major. At this time, all you can do is apply and await decision. Good luck.

I took the one in June 2016! Thank you
