period gpa vs. overall gpa?

I got my grade report recently, and my period gpa is a 3.66 while my overall gpa is a 2.902 (I messed up in freshman year, I’m pretty sure that year’s gpas were included in the overall, which is why it’s so low). Which one do colleges look at? or which one ‘matters’? I was originally planning to apply to UCs, but with an overall gpa of 2.902, I’m not qualified.

thanks!

No, I wouldn’t give up too fast. Although your freshman GPA was probably low, the colleges would definitely like the upward trend. It’s better than messing up in your junior year which I did unfortunately. I would count on your essay, recs and your EC’s for admission into the UC’s. Good luck!

Thanks-
I thought UCs didn’t take letters of recommendation though?

They will look first at overall GPA and then they will like the upward trend. Are you a senior? If not your senior year you have to get a GPA even better than the 3.66 from last time. A 3.7+ would really help continue the upward trend and pull your GPA up probably into the 3’s.

What is your state of residency?

I’m in California
