personal ads

what do you think of people who have personal ads for online dating?

reek of desperation?
or a good use of technology?

*what if they describe themselves as ‘attractive/handsome/beautiful’? do you think that is arrogant?

Well, it’s kind of like posting your resume online, in a sense. If you have a law degree from Harvard, you’re obviously going to put it on there. It’s not really a matter of arrogance. However, I do think that putting up a personal ad for online dating is embarrassing and desperate.

I just came back from my cousin’s wedding. They met on the Internet.

Well, there’s nothing wrong with meeting over the internet.
The issue at hand is whether or not it’s… overreaching… to whore oneself out this way =)

I would likely judge the woman to be desperate. I would assume that she has already been with many men. I wouldn’t regard her as arrogant, because I feel that people are able to judge superficial appearances in an unbiased way…

Why, are you a tech-savvy, desperate, beautiful woman? whistles

saying you’re attractive/handsome/beautiful, seems a lot different from saying you have a degree from harvard on your resume. with the degree you definitely have it, and no one could argue that. attractive/handsome/beautiful, is more a matter of general opinion, and does seem somewhat arrogant.

I remember reading a personal ad in the Washington Express newspaper about four years ago where the poster insisted he looked like Nick Lachey… That said, if you’re going to go for personal ads, try not to embarrass yourself.

It depends how the person presents him/herself; if you start comparing yourself to celebrities - like the above example - even if you look like an exact Gabrielle Union look-a-like, you’ll probably read as pompous.
I’d say show you’re attractive without directly saying it would read a lot less arrogant.

As for personal ads in general, I do think they teeter on the desperate side.
