personal MT obstacles

I am a rising senior, and have high hopes of having a fruitful senior year, as well as a successful audition process. My strongest point is my voice (soprano 1), but I feel like I have a couple of obstacles that keep me from performing to my potential:

Nerves. Several times when I have auditioned for various things, the accompanist has, for example, played the intro a little differently than I was used to, and it threw me off. Does anyone have any advice on what I can do to psych myself into being able to overcome any unexpected things like this? Even when I get back on track after a few seconds, I feel like my nerves affect my voice and my vocal quality suffers. I also generally have trouble with handling my nerves during the audition process.

I live in a rural area, and other than my choir directors at school (who are fantastic btw), I feel like I need some private vocal lessons, and especially some acting lessons specifically to help me with my monologue prep. I saw someone briefly refer on this board to something to do with Skype lessons…does anyone know anything about a reputable person who does this sort of thing?

Any advice would be appreciated!

blondie_09, I would imagine you will get some PMs from coaches on this sight who can help you, but if you don’t, let me know and I will give you a couple that I know of. Would do that now, but don’t have time to look up the contact info!

One easy way to work on those nerves and on being able to deal with slight differences in the way accompanists play and so on would be to ask various people you know who play the piano to accompany you. It won’t be exactly the same as having a stranger play for you, but it may get you somewhat more accustomed to forging on with your song, no matter what. Best of luck!
