Hey everyone,
I got a fee waiver from Michigan the other day with a handwritten note from the assistant dean. I was just curious if anybody knows if these go out to virtually everyone, or if it only goes out to people with a decent chance of admission.

I’m curious because I previously assumed that Michigan would be quite a reach for me, and I therefore didn’t give it much serious consideration at all.

I got one saying “We love Berkeley graduates” and they underlined in pen the word “impressive” in “impressive academic qualifications” in the typed part. (3.75+, 177+). Apparently they choose some random aspect and say that for pretty much everyone. Someone else I saw got “We love journalism majors”.

Obviously my own letter was not the basis for the general conclusion. In fact, when I first saw it, I was excited, thinking I had been singled out. Through later inquiry, I realized that the handwritten note is actually a staple of Michigan fee waivers. For example, the journalism major I mentioned had 170, 3.64.

Mine referenced the fact that I attended a women’s college (so did the dean of admissions, though not the same one). for what it’s worth, i had a below-median lsat and an above-average gpa and was accepted to michigan after applying with the fee waiver. I don’t think waivers are any guarantee (I was waitlisted at the other place that gave me a waiver) but it’s certainly a good sign.
