"Personal Security" virus

D1 has somehow picked up the Personal Security virus and it is holding her computer hostage! She says she has tried the fixes that are online and on youtube but they aren’t working. ANy suggestions or knowledge about this???

Google this “personal security virus removal”

Make sure you choose an approved site.

For the last ‘you need antivirus software’ trojan I had on my PC, I eliminated it by turning off the machine, turning it back on, and as soon as possible I immediately performing a scan using McAfee. That way you don’t have to go through the registry removal, etc. Might be worth a try.

I fixed a virus problem on my daughter’s laptop by using system restore, and going as far back as possible.

Not sure if that virus is the same as Personal Guard but it took hold of my pc in November and after trying every kind of antivirus/antimalware program I could, I had to reinstall Windows XP plus all of my original software programs and drivers and then reinstall Internet Explorer (which I don’t use anyway). Until I reinstalled IE, I kept getting popups and the Personal Guard kept reinstalling itself in my Programs. Wasn’t fun or pretty but so far so good (and my pc is 8 years old)!

NM…download Malware Bytes (free). It’s an awesome program…got me out of a huge bind last year. I also use CC Cleaner (as suggested in the attached instructions). Good luck!

Malware Bytes is very good.

If she’s running Windows XP, install and run Windows Defender. I think that it comes with Vista and Windows 7 and is turned on by default. Windows Defender is a freebie from Microsoft and it is an antispyware program. I find that I don’t need Spybot S&D anymore. I also only run MalWare Bytes once every two months instead of weekly with Windows Defender on. Note that it does slow your machine down when it is scanning.

Of course the best solution is to get a Mac.
