personal statement about why I took a year off college?

How do you start off a personal statement? I’m applying as a freshman even though I graduated in 2010 so the university wants a letter on why I took a year off from school. The reason is because my mom passed away december 2009, It was hard and I had to take care of my little brothers and I even volunteered.

My question is how should i start it off?
“Hi this is a personal statement regarding why I took a year off from school.” or what? lol

Also how long should it be? I’m assuming as long as an essay? Should I write it in the same format as an essay or what?

This is in addition to my essay btw.

This site is useless. Nobody ever answers me. And if they do, they are snooty and rude.

maybe you can include that your mom passed away and just explain your scenario inside the personal statement… then use that to see how you grew from it

if you’re talking about personal statement for UCs join the UC thread under transfers if you’re transferring. also, you might consider goign to a community college to apply in as a transfer instead.

I am very sorry for your loss.

You do not need to start writing this essay at the beginning. Start out with whatever part is easiest to write. As you go along, you will be able to figure out how to write the other parts.

You may want to use a title, which could be as mundane as Supplemental Statement, or whatever the university calls this particular essay.

This essay is an opportunity to show yourself as a responsible and trustworthy person. I think that 250-500 words would be a good target.

I would think so, unless you have something else specific in mind that you want to consider. Do you?
