How does the tone of personal statement for an engineering discipline such as Electrical vary from that for the sciences like Physics or Humanities? I asked a couple counselors and got completely opposite advice. One said to touch on technical for Engg. and the other said the personal statement is about me and to demonstrate my qualities through engineering related activities which might not be technical.
Your personal statement is about you. If there’s a supplemental of why this major, it’s different.
My daughter wrote about using tea as a bridge to relationships. A girl by me that got into Yale wrote about the exhilaration of waiting for Papa John’s delivery. I know another that wrote about the yellow fuzz on a tennis ball.
They know what you want to major in. Tell them something about you that they can’t glean from your app. It might tie into the major. Or It might discuss a scuba trip you took. Or the best meal you ever had in an Italian restaurant. There are various prompts. So answer one.

Of course, if you like solving design problems using math and science, then writing a personal statement on that may fit well with an engineering major, even if you do not mention the major in the essay.

Ideally, your personal statement shouldn’t be different based on intended major, nor should it be a review of your activities.
