Personal Statement: Prompt 1

I’m applying for Psychology at UCLA and Berkeley, and I’m writing about my intention to be a marriage and family counselor. But in answering the first prompt, I’m finding it nearly impossible to come up with relevant experience for my major. I’ve never formally counseled anyone, obviously, and I don’t think the admissions officers will care that I’ve given advice to friends and family.

The only thing I can think of is that I’ve tutored college students for several years. I think it is somewhat relevant because to be a good tutor, you have to understand how people learn and overcome obstacles in their education. You also have to have a good “bedside manner,” so to speak, in order for students to become comfortable with you.

I realize that relating tutoring to psychology/counseling is a bit of a stretch, but I’m at a loss for any other way I can fully answer the prompt.

Any thoughts? :)

Explain to them how you came to that major and why is it important. And you support your answer to the prompt by talking about life experiences that helped you develop an interest in your intended major.

You got 5 days left good luck.

Also talk about skills you have developed because of your experience. Whether you choose the tutor thing or not. It doesn’t need to be counseling experience. Just any skills that transfer over to your major. You developed effective communication skills, being put in the position of an adviser you developed a sense of accountability for yourself and confidence through bla blah blah
