Personal Statement question

First off, i am thinking about writing about how I met a transvestite at my church, and it opened my mind up to the LGBT population. Is this appropriate, or too controversial? Second, can you give me ideas on how to make my essay personal? Thanks.

Is this for the main essay or the supplemental “diversity” essay?

main essay

Just my opinion, but I don’t think you should use it as your topic for the main essay because:

1) If it’s not a topic you’re passionate about it will probably be harder to write about, which may lead to “stretching” for ideas in your essay, which results in a poor end product.
2) Generally if you’re going to write about a person, that person should have a deep and personal connection to you. Don’t write about this person you “met” and talked to maybe <5 times. Unless I’m just assuming things and you are VERY close to this person now; judging from your first post it doesn’t seem so.
3) It doesn’t really say anything about you. What do I learn from you about reading your essay, besides the fact that you don’t have a whole lot of exposure to the LGBT community?
