I don’t understand the personal statement. Can anyone point to an example on the web or something?

Is it just an essay that you spend talking about anything and everything regarding yourself?
People tell me to include any special circumstances, etc. in it, but is there a page limit?
Do colleges expect your whole persona do by typified by it? (and I say this to an extent)
Do we just start it like…“Hi, I’m ______. There’s something about derivatives that just makes me happy…” or what

in general, its 500 words. As to what you say, thats entirely up to you. Thats kind of the whole point of giving it as a prompt, to see how create you can be with such a broad topic. And I think you should consider starting off your essay like that. It would seem interesting to me, assuming you actually like math.

There’s two ways that can turn out-
It can come out as immature and lame, or it can come off as quirky. Since you seem like you dont really know what to do for the personal statement, I’d go with the former.
what you want out of the intro is a hooker- something that will take the reader’s interest and keep it. so far, i’ve read up to “Hi, I’m” and i’m bored. If you used something other than your name in the blank, then you may be able to pull that off. And i’d suggest not writing about math.
I’ve read a gazillion essays about math (most are for applications to MIT or CAltech or other such schools)… its a bit old. Write about a unique hobby of yours, or just whatever comes to mind.
Its moments when you are being random, spontaneous, off-the-wall are the moments that stand out, and are truly you. Don’t be intimidated by “omg what if they dont like it?” You want to market yourself. Just show yourself in the best light, but don’t lie. If you portray yourself as a profound or spectacular or likeable person, then you’ve succeded.
