Thanks for the info. I just happened to be trying out the Iams foil pouches for the first time. My pouches don’t seem to be part of the bad lot #s, but maybe I’ll hold off on giving them to the dog anyway…

CC is so amazing!!

It’s interesting that the recall affected some stores and not others, even though they all carry the same line of food - I guess it was different lots that were affected. Our dog usually eats the Dick Van Patten Natural Balance dry food, mixed in with a little bit of their canned stuff, but we also had some of the Nutro cans in the house. Even though none of the affected cans were sold by Petco, where I purchased them, they were gracious about taking these back anyway.

I keep remembering other recalls, such as the recent Peter Pan peanut butter one, where the scope of the recall was eventually expanded - so I wasn’t going to take any chances.

I’ve pulled all the Nutro chicken canned/pouch products off my shelves until I can get in the back today and check lot numbers. Figures this would happen over spring break when I actually am supposed to have some vacation days. I am still leaving for a 3 day trip tomorrow!

It looks like a huge recall because Menu Foods cans for so many different labels … the big three plus most of the private label store brands.

It does not sound like Menu is canning for the better brands, although it should be noted that the canned forumulae are all coming from different plants than the dry formulae, and very few of the dog food manufacturers have their own separate plants.

Looks like the bad food is coming from one or two plants.

my dog eats Merrick canned senior and Orijen dry- so it looks like those aren’t affected, but I have altered friends with pets

The better quality foods – the more holistic foods – are not affected.

Grocery store brands, plus Iams, Euk, SciDi and Nutro are all brands manufactured by Menu Foods.

What’s interesting to me is that I was just interviewed by a local daily about the recall – but I have yet to be contacted by any of my food reps. This story broke on Friday and it’s now Monday afternoon. I only carry one brand that may have some issues – but still! I had a sales rep call me this morning from a distributor that has a lot of affected brands – but he was calling about something else!

Most of the Iams are not made by Menu Foods- just a few of the canned and pouched items. so look at the codes before panicking!

It’s coming out today that the pet food in question may have been tainted with rat poison. A class action lawsuit is forthcoming…

I also heard about the rat poison on the radio today, gymeni. That’s just terrible. I have a 13 yr old dog, and I would just be devastated knowing that I was poisoning him with his food. We use Iams, but it’s the dry formula.

turns out the Iams pouches that I bought within the past month are on the recall list.

Thank goodness I hadn’t run out of old food before the recall!

Has anyone gone through the “getting your money back” procedure?

As a retailer … WE have not heard about how the manufacturers would like us to handle any refunding. In fact, I have not heard one single word from my supplier of the one affected brand that I carry.

However, if you bring your food into my shop … we’re going to help you out … if it’s the brand we carry, whether or not you bought it from me. And if it’s one of the ones that’s available to me that I choose not to carry, I can help you out with that too.

And suggest some better alternatives in the process.

Update:

I called the Iams Pet Recall # today. I had bought a 12 pack of pouches of dog food. They are sending me a voucher for 24 pouches. I may be asked to send them the dog food later (for testing purposes?). 4-6 weeks for the vouchers to arrive.

Costco has recalled some of its pet food
http://www.komotv.com/news/7232201.html

The Costco thing just makes me so angry…

I was in last week and noticed no canned dog food (housebrand). Usually there’s a pallet of the stuff. We still had some left over at home, but I don’t get in there that often. I wondered.

I called, I was assured it was fine and the pallet was somewhere on the floor, ( I didn’t want to call BS, but I knew it wasn’t out) just not in the pet food section. Now we will have to watch our dogs closely because somebody thought they were doing their company a favor by lying.

isn’t global trade a wonderful thing?

I had no idea that american pet food- even high end american pet food contained filler from China.
have our inspectors even been allowed over there yet?

As of a couple of weeks ago I wasn’t really worrying about pet food since we fed our Wheaten only dry food w/ no wheat or wheat gluten. Then I stumbled on this link, and read through all the posts from other owners. When I came across several mentions of the food our dog ate, I decided to play it safe and switch. (I also emailed our breeder and asked for her opinion. She did say some instances of people posting how their dog/cat was sick or had died and had been eating such and such a brand could be a coincidence – that pets do get sick for other reasons. I still decided to change food.)

Anyway, the stuff from China certainly sounds nasty!

^ Thank you for that excellent link CBBBlinker. Honestly, this is just ridiculous, isn’t it?!
