Petition for Certiorari granted by Supreme Court?? HELP any attorneys in the know.

I just received a letter stating that the state supreme court has granted the defendant the “Petition for Certiorari” . The issue before the court is “Whether a defendant’s opening statement can “open the door” to otherwise inadmissible evidence.”

I thought I was basically finished with this process. Would anyone be able to tell me what this means? I wish I would have received this letter during the work week and not on a Saturday when it is a holiday weekend. Is this common in court cases.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

This means that the state supreme court has agreed to review the lower court’s decision. The court might or might not hear oral arguments from the parties’ lawyers; the court probably will expect them to file briefs, whether or not it permits oral arguments. (I don’t know which state you’re in and what the state courts’ procedures are.) On Tuesday, if you haven’t heard from your lawyer or the prosecutor (if this is a criminal case), contact them to find out what you need to do, if anything.
