Petraeus GS '85 '87 named top ground commander in Iraq

<p>George Bush is set to appoint Lieutenant General David Petraeus as the top US commander in Iraq, it was reported today.
Lt Gen Petraeus, a military intellectual and counter-insurgency expert, is currently the head of the US army’s leading military schools.</p>

<p>He will be Mr Bush’s most important appointment as the US president prepares to unveil a fresh approach that is expected to include a temporary increase in troop numbers.</p>

<p>Lieutenant General Petraeus was the General George C. Marshall Award winner as the top graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College Class of 1983. He subsequently earned MPA and Ph.D. degrees in international relations from Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, and later served as an Assistant Professor of International Relations at the US Military Academy.</p>
