Petroleum Engineering: Difference in future prospects of BS, MS, PhD graduates.

Hi

I am an international student and have got an admit from UT Austin for an MS in Petroleum Engineering. I don’t have any prior work experience in Oil & Gas industry and I did my BS in Chemical Engineering.

I wanted to know

  1. The difference in study, work, life, job prospects and other relevant things for people who have done either BS from people who did MS and/or PhD in Petroleum Engineering?
  2. The future job prospects for MS, PhD students who would graduate in 2017 (MS) or 2019 (PhD)?
  3. Has the slump in the prices affected the job prospects severely? Should i join UT Austin Petroleum Engineering MS or prefer joining PhD Chemical Engineering elsewhere.

For the most part you should get a Job if you get an MS in Pet E from UT , like highly likely ,only thing is between a Phd and MS , is do you want to study for that long? do you have what it takes to study for 5 years and get a Phd? you should get a job regardless , its how much money you have to spend on tuition and how long your willing to be dedicated to stay in college

Thanks MyLonghorn for your reply; but is there no difference between the kind of work/projects that an MS and a Phd student would do in job?
Also I have heard that its difficult to get a job after MS Pet E if one is an international student. Is this true?

Any one please reply

I heard that one can get a job simply with an undergrad in petroleum engineering. However in your case you might want to get an MS to work as a PetE. Essentially its work and internship experience that gets you a job not your degree although your degree is very important in its self
