So when I talk to people at the career fair and drop off my resume, I heard companies screen for key words. I am applying to petroleum companies, and was wondering what sor of words they were looking for.

Please PM me or respond if you think you know.

I’m applying to places like ExxonMobil Chevron Oxy etc

i don’t think they scan for “key words” per se but they do scan for key information like GPA, objective, your career interests in different aspects of oil (e.g. production engineering, process engineering, environmental engineering etc…)

Actually they do screen for key words, most large companies that use databases to receive resumes will use programs to scan resumes and identify key words and phrases that the hiring manager(s) will identify for specific positions. This can include gpa, but I this would be rare occurance.

When submitting your resume it is important to tailor it to the specific job you are applying for. Get a hold of the job discription, or a comparitive job description, and identify words that you would think are key to the job function and to the individual they are looking for. Then, throughout your resume try and incorporate these words or synonyms.

If they are looking for someone who is “detail oreinted” say you have a “strong attention detail”. If they ask for strong analytical stills say something like “ability to analyze and interpret data”. Etc…

So, I would take resumes to your career fair for a) the target job, b) the targeted industry, and c) a general resume just in case.

I don’t recommend saying things like “strong attention to details”. You should give examples in your resume of actions which demonstrate these. Show don’t tell is what I heard is the right way.
