Pharmacy degree - failed residency match - try for a job or reapply for residency?

This is an area I am not at all familiar with, so hoping for some collective wisdom for CC experts. Friends’ kid graduated this May with a degree in pharmacy after a six-year program. Unfortunately, didn’t match for residency (she did have a few interviews, but nothing panned out). She has since finished all the licensing requirements and has been looking for a job. She’d prefer to get a job in a hospital, rather than retail.

Should she be looking to reapply for residency later this year? She’s concerned that her app won’t look like it has improved from last year. She’s thinking that it might be best to find a job, work for a year or two and then reapply for residency. Thoughts? How hard is to match for residency? How hard/easy is it to find a job that’s hospital related, when you haven’t done your residency?

Don’t know the answer but this is a link to the Student doctor. pharm forum. You might find a larger group of knowledgeable posters here.

Definitely ask this in studentdoctor.net

Where is her university in all of this?

She doesn’t need the advice of a bunch of strangers on the internet. She needs a meeting ASAP with a Dean from her Department, her academic advisor, and the person in career services who manages the allied health students.

She is not the first person in the world not to match and she’s not the last. But without the help of her university to move past this, a bunch of anecdotes isn’t going to help her. And figuring out how to jump from CVS to a major teaching hospital- for example- is something that requires expert guidance. If you want to help your friends kid- send her BACK to her university for some straight talk. She paid for expert advice to launch- she needs to take advantage of it.

Did she go through both First match and the Second Match? What about the Post-match scramble ? If she went through these and still didn’t match she should ask her school what the best next step should be. Depending on the area of the country she’s in, she may not be able to get a hospital job without at least a PGY1 residency . I believe this year’s first match had about a 50% chance .

@blossom -she is not relying on this thread/forum for advice. I was looking to gather additional information here - just for my understanding of the process. Her mom is frustrated, doesn’t understand the space either. So, I was hoping any information I get here would help the two of us.

@taskmstrx - I believe she did go through both the first and second match. I do not know of the post-match scramble.

Had dinner with her yesterday. She got a job in a small hospital all the way across the country !! She really wanted to move out there and I am so glad it worked for her - she’s planning on heading out there next month after completing the licensing exams for that state.

Thanks for the update. If she decides to try for a residency again, a year in a hospital setting will be a plus.Glad to hear she has a job!

Hospital jobs are hard to come by. That said, we had a pharmacist who had worked for several years in hospital before getting a residency after initial app didn’t pan out. Good luck!!
