Pharmacy school @ UH hilo?

Anyone know anything about the university of hawaii at hilo’s pharmacy school? the overall gpa and science gpa for acceptance is only 2.8…? Anyone heard anything?

Please remember that even if the overall GPA for acceptance is only 2.8, that does not mean a student who continues to earn 2.8 in college will actually be able to graduate from the place in 4 years (or however long it takes for the Pharm program). Take a look at the 4 year graduation rate for this university. Chances are it is 50% or lower. That means that while students who enter with a 2.8 are granted the opportunity of getting their acts together in college, quite a few of them don’t. By the time students are in junior and senior levels at that university, a whole bunch of their freshman year classmates will have dropped out.

When you are looking at a pharmacy school, you need to check the numbers of its graduates who pass their boards on their first try, and job placement rates. Do you want to work in Hawaii? If this is the only pharmacy school in the state, chances are you ought to study there because they will have the professional network that will get you a job.

Ya I haven’t found any statistics like that. I’ve looked everywhere but no luck for UH - Hilo

kol - There’s a guy who posts on the SDN forums who goes to Hilo, check the pre-pharm section, I think he goes by “Beav”. Also, there’s a compiled list of recent gpa’s and PCAT scores for accepted students, again probably in the prepharm section. Good luck!

Have you asked the pharmacy school for this information, or are you just wandering around in their website looking for it? Why not pick up the phone and call them and ask? You can bet that they know exactly how many of their graduates are passing the exams and getting jobs.

OP - Hilo has not yet graduated a class from PharmD therefore no NAPLEX data is available. Looks like they’ve only had a pharmacy program since 07 and ACPE just awarded them “candidate” status in June. I believe ACPE will not give full accredidation until after their first class graduates in 2010. Btw, that’s not necessarily a bad thing, just the way it works for new pharmacy schools.
