is the phd worth it if one ultimately wants to break into the private sector? i used to want to be a university professor, but i feel that society demands that i choose a more lucrative career path as opposed to a career in the pure sciences. i’m thinking of a phd in the biosciences but i would eventually like to break into venture capital or hopefully upper management in the biotech/pharmaceutical industry. i know i would love the thrill of science but is it really worth the time and effort in the long run (monetarily, that is)?

Why do you care what society demands you should do? A PhD is about doing what you’re interested in so you can achieve what you want to achieve in life.
