PhD programs in Romance Languages

Does anyone here know what the best PhD programs for Romance Languages are? Particularly programs whose primary focus is not literature but pedagogy and communication. Programs that have good funding and excellent reps. Italian as primary concentration with French as secondary with the option for a third minor language. ?

I would suggest the best way to answer this question is to talk to professors in your department. They’ll know what the current trends and who the field leaders are. Another good way, especially since you seem to know the general focus of your research interests, is to look to where the scholars you would most like to work with are teaching. You want to look at schools not just for general reputation (though that is very important), but also for people you’re interested in actually working with. As far as funding goes, in the humanities, the ivys tend to be the best funded (as they have the most money). Some of the UCs have very competitive funding as well, though this can differ by department.
