<p>Is it pretty safe to say almost everyone at UW got this email? The requirements for this honor society are pretty low & they say this is a new honor society… seems pretty sketchy. This is the 2nd email they’ve sent me</p>

<p>Whether it’s valid or not, I’m not going to join… Phi Beta Kappa sounds much better, the requirements to get in are much higher</p>

<p>This is a reminder that due to your outstanding academic achievement and student involvement, Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity invites you to become a part of the founding class of our newest Chapter at the University of Washington and invite you to one of our information meetings this week!</p>

<p>What is Phi Sigma Pi? Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity is an active, undergraduate co-educational organization that mixes the best elements of an honor society, service organization and social group into a fusion of Scholarship, Leadership and Fellowship. We are an active campus organization that offers a wide variety of experiences for our members, both male and female, ranging from academic programs and leadership opportunities to service projects and social gatherings. Members are well-rounded people who like to stay connected – with our studies, within our community and with our potential. In Phi Sigma Pi, you’ll gain life-long connections and friendships with other students at the University of Washington and beyond.</p>

<p>We’re looking to establish a new undergraduate Chapter of Phi Sigma Pi at the University of Washington and we’re looking for the best and brightest students that your campus has to offer – students like you! We think you’d be a great part of Phi Sigma Pi and hope that this is a great fit for you. Please join us at one of our Information Meetings to learn more about our organization and find out how to join our Fraternity. These meetings are scheduled on April 5, April 6, and April 9, as follows:

<p>Please feel free to invite any friends who also meet the requirements - we would love to meet them, and this will bring us closer to our goal of a strong Phi Sigma Pi chapter at the University of Washington! Eligible undergraduate students will have completed at least one quarter of college work, a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher and graduating in the fall 2012 quarter or later.</p>

<p>Yeah I’ve gotten these emails every quarter. I personally don’t know anyone who has said they joined, but it would be interesting to see what a non-recruiter student has to say about it.</p>

I know it has been over a year since you posted these concerns, but I have just taken the presidency of the University of Washington’s Phi Sigma Pi chapter, and I wanted to address some of your concerns in hope that you would reconsider our offer to join should you still be eligible. One of your concerns was the newness of our group, and in Spring Quarter of 2012 the Zeta Sigma Chapter was colonizing at the UW so we were very new! However, our organization has actually been around since 1916 where it was founded at what is now called the University of Central Missouri. Another concern of yours were our entrance requirements. While a 3.00 may seem low for an honors organization - a 3.00 GPA is still 0.30 GPA points above the science major GPA average and we strive to be inclusive of ALL majors! In an effort to be more competitive in recruiting students like you who are interested in strong academic groups, we have increased our GPA entrance requirement to 3.2 cumulative GPA. One last thought before I let y’all go, we’re called a fraternity and call each other “Brothers” because we embrace the concept of “Brotherhood.” Brotherhood is fostered by sharing common goals and common experiences. We strive to engage in events that strengthen our Brotherhood bonds. We view each person as an integral part of the extended Phi Sigma Pi family (the key word being family). Phi Sigma Pi becomes a second home for students, a home comprised of a group of people that respect, trust, value and appreciate each other. Our Brothers not only enjoy working alongside each other during official Phi Sigma Pi events, but they genuinely desire to be with each other outside of officially sponsored Phi Sigma Pi events as well. Brotherhood becomes a bond that lasts long after graduation. Societies typically do not cultivate this type of relationship with their members. I can promise that if you join our group you will have relationships like this!
