Philosophy Classes at UCD

Has anyone here taken a philosophy class at UC Davis? How was it? Could you describe your experience?

I loved Philosophy in community college and was thinking about double majoring in philsophy (I am a Nutrition Science major), but I am scared that philosophy classes at UCD will be more difficult than the ones I took at my community college.

I’ve only taken one philosophy course at Davis (PHI 101 or something) which was metaphysics. Based on that one class, there were occasional easy quizzes and quite a few papers which may or may not be graded harshly although it depends on your TA. There is also a large amount of reading which I would assume is normal for a philosophy course. Overall, I think that philosophy courses are very manageable as long as you’re willing to put the time in.

I took PHI 1 (intro to philosophy) and PHI 23 or something, I forgot exactly, but it was philosophy of language. Intro was pretty easy but the lectures were really boring. I probably went to 1 in every 5 lectures or so, go in take a quiz leave. I went to almost every discussion though because that was actually interesting; it helped me out with the essays but not with the lecture notes. Thought I did horribly on the final (I didn’t go to class the class prior so I didn’t know it was open note/laptop) but ended up getting a B in the class.

Moral of the story is if you try at all you’ll probably get an A… but that depends on the prof.
