One of my children is considering a job in the Phoenix area. How is the quality of living for a mid to late 20’s?

My kid lives there and loves it. He lives in Phoenix proper, not Scottsdale or any suburb.

Excellent. Low entry cost for houses; tons of young people. Great weather most of the time! I can answer specific questions you might have. This is the 6th largest city in the US…different areas have different vibes of course…

It is a wonderful, outdoorsy place. You need a car, though public transport is developing. You need a tolerance for heat, though summer involves going from one air conditioned space to another for most of the population. I always ran in early morning, and was fine. If needing cooler temperatures, a drive north or to San Diego will do the trick.

Though Phx/Scottsdale is my home town, D was looking at a job there, and I realized I’d have concerns about her moving and that specific job, due to the political climate. Also, due to the suburban nature of the area with the job. Downtown Phoenix neighborhoods are developing and changing into a rather interesting communities. In places it can be very conservative politically, and depending on the work environment, difficult to be yourself if of other political persuasions, and her proposed job was in an area that I think would be difficult for her personally. Scottsdale and Tempe, probably are less conservative. On the other hand, it may be just your cup of tea!

The crime rate in some areas is high.

But there always have been many creative folks doing interesting things there as well, if you know where to look, and it is a city of immigrants from other parts of the country, which can make it interesting. I love the state, and Phoenix with a passion, but the Phoenix area has pluses and minuses.

Though I have not lived there for years, I go back to visit family once or twice a year. I would be very happy to be corrected on any of the above by current residents.

Lots of good feedback.
Political climate is one of my major concerns. She is liberal but has lived in some conservative areas. I don’t know how important a piece of the equation that is for her.

A major appeal is the cost of living and that it is not difficult to get to Ca from there for visits with family. A major drawback is not being near an ocean.
I will be interested in if she decides to even apply.

I’m a tree hugging liberal from Oregon. It can be tough here at times. I remedy that by living in Tempe, which is a college town (although that is not ALL that it is) and as liberal as AZ gets other than Tucson.
