I assume this is a fraudulent phone call; It was a robo call and said I am being sued by IRS and left a number for me to call. How does the scheme work? Am I already in trouble having answered the call?
Nope. Just ignore it.
Ya, I’ve gotten 2 calls. iRS writes letters
Ignore. I’ve had several friends get this call last week.
Yes it is. My mom got a very similar call. Thankfully, at 87, she is still in her right mind and knew it was a scam.
Why would you be in trouble for answering the call?
I came home one day and had 3 of these calls on my home machine - from 3 different people claiming to represent the IRS and leaving 3 different numbers.
If you were in trouble with the IRS, a phone call would not be the way they would get in touch with you. This is just the latest trendy phishing scheme.
See the official IRS explanation:
IRS will never call you unless you are already engaged with them. Ever. Ignore.
It works by them telling you that you need to pay XX by 5:00 or you will be arrested. You can pay via prepaid debit cards and just give them the numbers over the phone.
Repeat: IRS will never make the first contact via phone.
The only trouble may be if the scammer now realizes they hit on a good phone # and continues to call. If you can block their number that would be good but odds are their calls will show multiple originating numbers. They’ll give up eventually.
They always have an accent when they leave messages on our phone.
Scam. Our second (different) scam attack. Not happy here
My favorite was when I got a call from the “IRS” telling me I owed taxes because of a sex crime. In a heavy Indian accent. Damnit, they tax everything these days!
My call this week said that ignoring the call would represent a deliberate second offense, so call now and “let us help you help yourself.” Good grief.
This actually freaked my mom out so much – I couldn’t believe she was taken in by that. I guess they have some measure of success since they keep doing it.
Yep…we were called too…our second notice. I hung up. Can’t seem to block the call.
Never, ever, ever call them back. Call the IRS directly if it concerns you. I suggest the same with ANY company. I have received several phishing emails too. I never call or email the number they give. Look up the company and contact them directly.
You can’t block the calls because it’s many different scammers using huge phone banks with spoofed numbers. I’ve gotten at least 6 of those calls this year (at least 4 different voices and I have been getting them for years). I never answer, but I get the messages. I actually got two different ones in a single day.
When the IRS starts an audit, they send a letter. When you owe them money and haven’t responded to letters, they garnish your wages – they don’t bother with lawsuits.
I’ve been getting a lot of emails from “PayPal,” telling me to download some form. Yeah, right. I also get emails from “Wells Fargo,” where I have never, ever had an account.
It’s a strange new world.
I got an email stating that my “account” would be “closed” if I didn’t call and submit some information to address potential fraud on my “account.” It didn’t bother to say which “account” it was referring to.
Um, no, not that gullible.
I received a call recently but since I didn’t recognize the number I didn’t pick it up.
I recently got a new cellphone number so thought this was suspicious. Look up the phone number on the internet and you may find out it is a scam. When I checked the number online there were reports of the caller pretending to be IRS.
We’ve had that “IRS” call.
Does anyone get the “Windows Technical Support” call? That one has come through, same live operator, about every 4 weeks for a couple years. I now remind him that I told him last call we are a Mac family. Crazy.
