Am I the only one who is constantly running out of storage and having to go in and try and delete photos, videos etc from my iphone/icloud and my Google account?
I pay I think .99/month for some extra icloud space. I don’t pay for more Google space…is it time I do that? I’m so annoyed to see that message constantly that my space is almost full.
I do have all my iphone photo library go to Google pictures - it just seemed at the time years ago that it was a good back up for photos. The whole photos on my devices thing is a curse and I can never keep up with managing the thousands of photos I have…
Any tips and thoughts would be interesting to hear.
On your iPhone, go to Settings → Photos.
Do you have “Optimize iPhone Storage” checked?
That will replace high resolution photos (which take up a lot of space) with smaller sized versions. The originals are stored in the cloud and will be downloaded automatically when you access those photos.
For me, it wasn’t about phone storage, but Google cloud storage. I did finally bite the bullet and start paying the monthly fee to get 100gb, just a few weeks ago. Tired of deleting photos.
I don’t use iCloud, but have all my docs etc in Dropbox for free.
Yes! I think I have to bite the bullet and pay for more storage. I try to delete photos, but getting impossible. I am also not sure the best way to store photos out of the cloud. I don’t have an iphone so would be on google.
Let me add that both services are just online storage, not a true backup solution. The difference? If you accidentally delete photos (or someone playing with your phone does so) then you may not be able to recover them. See Restore recently deleted photos & videos - Computer - Google Photos Help which says in part “You can restore recently deleted photos and videos that are still in your trash. Items that are permanently deleted can’t be restored. Backed up photos and videos stay in your trash for 60 days.”
With Black Friday just around the corner you might want to buy a flash drive and copy your pictures to it, then put it in a safe place. This isn’t a perfect solution (it’s still not really backup) but at least you’ll have somewhere to recover files should they accidentally be deleted online.
We have this issue because we have iPhones with pics stored in iCloud (I think we are paying for extra space.) But - our DIL has an android and stores hers with Google. And she keeps a shared file with pics of our granddaughter, which we want access to - and that is what is giving us the out-of-space message. From what I can tell, the Google app requires us to connect our ICloud photo library in order to be able to see the shared folder of GD pics. It is currently driving my H nuts!! But he doesn’t want to lose access to seeing all the new GD photos, since we live 500 miles from her. But we also don’t want to pay for Google storage when we don’t actually use it to store our photos!!
@abasket, not sure why you would need to connect your photos to Google - ?
My daughter has dropbox for her “extra” storage. She has built up a pretty sizeable space by getting free extra space for recommending another email. As a family we have several emails, and now all of them have unused dropbox accounts to get her that extra storage.
If you have Amazon Prime, you get free unlimited online photo storage. My iPhone updates to that storage regularly. I can make and share albums there, or upload into Google photos and share that way.
Photo Storage : Amazon Prime members get free, unlimited, full-resolution photo storage, plus 5 GB video storage
I do have the $.99 plan for iCloud because sometimes I take a lot of pictures and videos that don’t get reviews and deleted as preferred for a while. But I am nowhere close to my 50gb storage at present.
But doesn’t this take up your personal iCloud space? Does everyone remember when Google promised ever expanding storage for free, only to get us hooked? I resent them making me an addict and now expecting me to pay…. I’m thinking of just getting additional external hardrives, because yes, they are both telling me I am full.
If you do go the google route, you can share that storage (100, 200GB or 2TB) with the ‘family’ you set up. I don’t believe there are any restrictions on location like there are with streaming services.
I am probably just going to bite the bullet and pay a small monthly fee on Google in addition to my .99/cent (I think) icloud fee. I’m so over it! I just REALLY get tired of paying $$$ for everything I seem to use!
I could check out the Amazon Prime storage.
My iphone currently has 4892 photos and 192 videos. Am I average? Above average? I truly hate going through and deleting photos, screen shots, videos etc.
