I was wondering what Brown charges to make long distance phone calls from dorm rooms. I’m trying to decide on a cell phone plan for next year so any information would be helpful.

Brown using Paetec, which charges 6 cents a minute, or you can pay a monthly fee to get 3 cents a minute. I don’t remember what the monthly rate was, I just know it was a total ripoff for me at least to use it vs the 6 cents a minute, I think it may have been like $6 a month.

I never used the phone in my room – it was inconvenient and expensive. If you have a cell phone, use that. If not, you’ll want to get one!

It seems to be the general consensus that cell phones are better. Thank you for the info!

Just to appease my curiosity, are local calls free or does the charge apply to everything? How about incoming calls? I’m just trying to figure out how many minutes I need my phone plan to provide.

incoming is free, anything with a 401 area code is free. I love Brown is right, a cell phone is def better, I only used the room phone because I had a really old (~5 years old) phone on sprint service, and so I got no reception in my room. My new sprint phone got 1 or 2 bars, which was enough to make phone calls from my desk.
