Phones for College

Are there many places to charge your phone through out the day? I am planning to get a EVO 4g but i have heard reports that they have very poor battery life and this concerns me.

If it’s that bad that you have to be charging it more than once every two days, it’s too inconvenient no matter how many outlets you might find.

" If it’s that bad that you have to be charging it more than once every two days"

you just described about every smartphone

seriously? thats a waste of money then  i charge mine every 4 days.

Don’t get this phone. You don’t want to have to charge your phone after every call. That’s just ridiculous.

While smartphones generally have shorter battery lives than dumb phones, one charge should get you through at least one day with normal to heavy usage.

I use my phone a lot and while it can probably go two full days off of one charge, I’d rather play it safe.

It isn’t hard at all to just plug it in at night when you go to bed.

edit: Engadget said the phone’s battery life was fine.

^^^ Seriously? Why do people even want them? Do as I do and get a cheap flip phone without the special features you’ll never even use.

Smart phones are the best thing to ever happen. Ive went from a Tmobile Wing, a G1 and now an iPhone. Hell, Im writing this from my iphone.

I dont understand how people can live with regular flip phones. Literally 99% of the people i know have smartphones.

Get the evo. Dont use 4g when you dont have to and get a task manager to shut down apps. Your battery problems will be solved. Just charge it when you sleep.

If I were an Android person, I’d get the Evo.

Oh, really? I’m writing this from my computer, which has a 16" monitor. :stuck_out_tongue: If you get the Evo phone and if you don’t, you’re losing some convenience both ways. Would you rather be able to go for 4 days without a charge or enjoy the added features of a smartphone?

Added features for sure. Whats so hard about charging a phone while you sleep?

Mobile internet >>

Seriously, your biggest argument is that you wont be able to charge it?

I can do 90% of what you can do on your computer on my phone. I can get gps directions, play games, get online, pay bills, look things up on the fly, watch youtube.

Seriously, why would you not want a smart phone?

Some people don’t need to be hooked up to the Internet all day long. And if a college student’s helping his parents pay for his/her tuition and living expenses, it’s a good idea to not have to spend the extra cash/month on a data plan. College students probably aren’t the wealthiest population. On the other hand, if he/she isn’t helping to pay for things, that’s an extra burden for Mom and Dad. I can definitely see how a smartphone could come in handy sometimes, but to answer “Why would you not want a smart phone?” I’d say there are good reasons for not wanting one.

I can see how cost is a factor. Students who are on a family plan would likely be paying more on an individual data plan.

On the other hand, I switched to a data plan because it was cheaper than my previous minutes-only plan. It’s really hard to beat unlimited web/data/messages and 400 minutes for $25 a month.

Smart phones are amazing. I just got the new samsung captivate. It blows iphone out of the water. Get that. I get through a day and half with normal usage.

i have a smartphone that can last me a solid 3 days with calling and texting and facebook browsing…nokia e71x=GOD.

Cost is about the only reason I’d see not to get a smart phone. I love having a well-designed piece of hardware with a great keyboard that lets me do things like get directions easily to a place, with great visuals (Google Maps) or GPS navigation (Sprint Navigation). I like being able to write a tweet, embed a picture and my current location with it and send it. I like being able to receive facebook messages on the go. I like having almost any web site at my finger tips.

I can’t see myself ever going back to a dumbphone unless I have to.

I also think cost is the only reason. Of course, pretty much everything would be worth it if it were free/cheap enough. =P
Or if you live in a forest with magical reception but no outlets to charge your phone so you can only charge it every three days when you go into town…

Personally, I just ordered an iPhone over the Samsung Captivate because I decided the Captivate was a little too big to be practical for me.
Either way, I wanted the mobile internet access, especially for college when I’m gonna be in a new, mostly unfamiliar place.

Also, we’re just doing a lot of upgrading. My mom and I are moving up from 2.5-year-old slider phones with no texting.
Judging from that, a lot of this probably isn’t necessary, but I think it’ll be useful.
My current phone can hold a charge for…days, but I’m willing to adjust to a nightly charge for it.

Interesting question. Well when your in class I doubt there is somewhere to charge your phone.

Actually, now that I think of it…it’s probably unlikely, but if you have a small class and sit by a wall there might be an outlet. I mean, I never would’ve thought of charging my phone in my pocket as I sat in class before my high school English class last year when a few people did it often even though my teacher hated cell phones (though he’s not one of those teachers with tons of rules…it was like THE only thing he didn’t like was cell phones. And bad grammar.).
People did it in my psych class, too.
But maybe college is a totally different world, I don’t know, I haven’t been there. I just know I’ll probably have smaller classrooms.

Some classrooms have tables with power outlets. They are meant for laptops, but I guess you could use them to charge your phone as well.
