What is the photography program like at Williams? Also, how is the art department in general? Thanks.

luna, the art studio department at Williams is quite strong, especially in conjunction with the art history offerings and the very accessible museums.

I wouldn’t say that Williams is a destination for photography per se but they do have a fulltime instructor whose specialty is photography (Aida Laleian) and offer at least two photography and/or video classes each term.

This is, of course, considerably fewer than you would find at an art school or at a larger university, but at Williams you would be encouraged to take a diverse range of courses both within the art department and in other disciplines so it isn’t as limited as it appears.

Also: I don’t know very much about the program (except that it’s good) – my parents are alums so I’ve been on campus but I’m not applying. However, I’ve been in the darkroom briefly and it is BEAUTIFUL. The whole art building is, especially the studio spaces for drawing and paiting, but I’m a photography person so I was drawn to the darkroom. :)

Also, I think that photo is one of those things that you can study independently very easily. As long as there’s a professor who knows what s/he’s doing and the darkroom resources are available (which they are at Williams) you’ll definitely be able to pursue it. Basically, unless you want to take all photography courses during college, I wouldn’t let it stop you from applying.
