Blaming women when they are sexually assaulted, is not an unexpected stance from someone who endorsed Todd Akin (r-mo, …" Body has ways of shutting down a pregnancy that occurred after rape"), and who believes that it is impossible for a married woman to be raped by her husband, because marriage implies consent.

CC for free is MUCH better than the current “4-year or die” mentality. Lots of CCs have trade school degrees, 2-years including practical training or apprenticeship. Making a CC into a votech or college option would be GREAT. Making them free would be GREAT.
Making them free by requiring at least two years of working in civil or military service would be GREAT.
Think about it - how many kids actually have all the choices laid out to them? I have a very smart young teenager who right now is on the path to get As and Bs in HS honors classes, but is looking at votech as an option. Because he might want to take up a trade instead of go to college. Wow, to think his two college-educated parents would DARE let him decide his own future! Let him do auto repair or cooking. If he wants to do it, it is not a waste.
What is a waste is all the money going towards administrators who brag about enrollment and grudgingly report freshmen retention and 4-year and 6-year graduation rates.
Are you saying that students who need remedial math shouldn’t be in college at all?
I am not surprised Sarah Lawrence has empty seats. Its considered the most expensive college int the nation,IIRC http://www.businessinsider.com/the-10-most-expensive-colleges-in-america-2014-11
Well, being expensive doesn’t stop NYU and other schools from filling their seats…
Bay, so you are proposing affirmative action/reduced admsisions standards for men?
oldmom,
I don’t think we know enough to determine whether affirmative action or reduced admissions standards (versus say, different admissions standards) are needed.
If private colleges conclude that the student body benefits from a relatively equal gender balance, then I support it (and I think some of them already do this).
If research shows that society benefits from relatively equal numbers of men and women going to college, then I support it for public colleges too.
If the colleges and universities, especially the private ones, are comfortable with their admissions policies and procedures, all of the postulating and proposing here is going to be essentially spitting in the wind.
If only men went to college, think about the increase in male rape victims!!!
I’d be curious to know the gender breakdown among students who matriculate in a college but fail to graduate. I have my suspicions (based on my anecdotal observations), but I don’t really know.
My numbers OCD is kicking in:
The rule-of-thumb is that 40% of the population is male, but only half of them are seen as potential dating material (20% of the population).
Half of the dateable males are in committed relationships already, leaving 25% of the males as both dating material and available (10% of the student population).
They are saying 10% of the student population is male and available and meets the desirability criteria. That is far different than saying 10% of the males are dateable.
Oh my goodness…only 25% of men that are attending college are considered “dating material” and “meets the diserability criteria.” Picky ladies we’re raising these days sounds to me.
Personally, I don’t even think that I’d date 10% of the men or women I met in college. If that makes me picky, so be it. I like what I like.
But my 10% is not anyone else’s 10%. The whole “10%” thing is a bunch of baloney.
Good! As a mother of both a son and a daughter, I’m glad. I want my daughter to have high standards and my son to end up with someone who thinks he’s a great catch. ![]()
Well, the 10-percent thing is personal. It kind of has to be doesn’t it? There is no dating pool that is attractive to everyone. But we behave how we behave based on our perceived pool, I think.
I thought the notion that women went to college to get their “MRS” degree died with the dinosaurs. Women go to college to get a good education. It makes me sad to hear some people still think women go to college to select their china and silver patter. Really gag-worthy.
